  Um den Radreifen vor Erwärmung zu bewahren und die Abnützung der der Reibung ausgesetzten Teile zu verhindern, erscheint es von Wichtigkeit, die Innenfläche des Reifens je nach den Umständen mit flüssigen,   halbfüssigen,   oder festen Fettstoffen zu schmieren. 



  Bei zum Teil metallischen elastischen Radreifen oder solchen mit Ledermänteln können Mineralöle als Schmiermittel verwendet werden, während bei Kautschukreifen pflanzliche Öle, wie Rizinusöl, die nicht lösend auf Kautschuk wirken, angezeigt erscheinen. Diese Öle können auch mit festen Schmiermitteln gemischt sein. Eine befriedigende Schmierung wird auch mit Graphit allein erzielt. In allen Fällen muss der Mantel des Reifens aus einem durch die betreffenden Schmiermittel nicht angreifbaren Material bestehen.
