The other furnace devices, such as the draft control, adjustable by means of rods 39 valves 38, the tracks 46 laid on the central wall, the scaffolding 47 and the roof structure 48, the bridge 49, the roller trains 51, 52 u. s. w. can be used in any of the conventional designs for ring furnaces without affecting the system of firing and exhaust openings required for the combustion process described below.
The mode of operation of the furnace can be seen most clearly from FIG. 5 of the drawing, in which the twenty departments of the selected embodiment are shown schematically in the developed cylindrical section through the center of the endless combustion channel.
In the work situation just considered, department 1 is filled with raw bricks or other firing material. Department 2 has already been emptied and the finished goods are carted out from 3.
'"to 7 are compartments with different temperatures, in which the fired material is gradually cooled by supplying air to chambers 9-1 () through the same in the direction of the arrow Fuel is supplied so that the high temperature required for cooking is reached of about 10,000 C. In chambers 11-16, the already dried material is preheated by the exhausting combustion gases escaping in compartment 16 through duct 36 into smoke collector 37 so that the temperatures in these chambers incidentally prevail as they are entered in Fig. iu degrees Celsius.
Finally, in chambers 17-20 there is a separate smoking out of the goods from the rest of the furnace operation. These compartments are mutually and from the adjacent chambers 1 and 16 by the displaceable partition plates 50

and, as mentioned above, has a beneficial effect on the economic efficiency.
Since the work process continues endlessly from left to right in the same order of the individual operations with reference to FIG. 5, it is evident that the smoke duration
