<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
Fig. 2).
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
So erhält man z.

The invention relates to a mixture of building materials, for example for civil engineering, for the production of moldings, for coatings and. Like., consisting of aggregate, in particular natural sands and stones and artificial heavy and light substances, and sulfur as a binder, the sulfur being melted and mixed with the additives. If this mixture is cooled or left to cool, a material of concrete-like hardness is obtained, which is often also referred to as "sulfur concrete".
Since the so-called sulfur concrete is extremely resistant to aggressive media, and its final strength - in contrast to concrete made with hydraulic binders - is obtained immediately after solidification, the so-called sulfur concrete is used for numerous purposes in civil engineering, moldings, etc.
However, sulfur has a significantly lower compressive strength than cement stone.
As a result, the construction of a low-cavity and thus optimally load-bearing rock structure is necessary. The binder and thus sulfur requirement is determined not only by the cavity to be filled but also by the surface area of the respective grain mixture.
DE-PS No. 742176 uses a composition of the additives in which the grain size is 0 to 0.1 mm 43% by volume. Due to the large specific surface area of this grain mixture, high sulfur contents of about 25% by weight are also necessary.
The electrically conductive sulfur cement produced in GB-PS No. 1, 398, 306 also has sulfur contents of about 70% by weight.
However, a number of properties of the so-called sulfur concrete depend primarily on the sulfur binder content and grow with it in a disadvantageous manner.
The flammability, the linear thermal expansion and the volume shrinkage during the melt-solid transition are mentioned as examples. The latter leads to the formation of cracks when solidifying larger masses. Another problem with high binder and thus sulfur contents is the strong tendency to segregate molten sulfur and aggregate.
The invention was therefore based on the object of achieving a minimization of the binder contents, but at the same time ensuring good processability and achieving high compressive and bending tensile strength values.
According to ÖNORM B 3304, for surcharges 0/8 the sieve line range A 8 to B8 is recommended for favorable grain gradations of the aggregates for the production of cement concrete; (see also DIN 1045). The first attempts to produce sulfur concrete followed these sieving lines and were therefore in this area. However, it was found that the processability was extremely poor and the tendency to segregate was very strong. As a result, no homogeneous products could be produced.
The invention is further based on the object of avoiding these disadvantages and of improving a building material mixture of the type mentioned in such a way that substantially greater strengths are achieved after it has solidified.
This object is achieved according to the invention by a building material mixture which is suitable, for example, for building construction and civil engineering for the production of moldings, for coatings, etc. and which consists of aggregate with a preselected grain spectrum, in particular natural sands and / or stones and artificial mineral aggregates and There is sulfur as a binder, the sulfur being melted and mixed with the additives, which is characterized in that the additive has a proportion of 10 to 25% by weight of particles in the particle size range up to 0.125 mm and a proportion of 15 up to 30% by weight of particles in the grain size range up to 0.25 mm, while the remaining fraction from 45 to 75% has a largest grain of preferably up to 8 mm and that as a binder,
in particular in amounts of 19 to 21 wt .-% based on the amount of the total mixture, elemental sulfur contained preferably at least one plasticizer, in particular olefinic hydrocarbon, such as. B. dicyclopentadiene, cyclooctadiene, cyclodecadiene, dipentene, styrene, vinylcyclohexene or mixtures thereof is added.
The invention therefore treads a completely new path in that the specified grain selection does not follow the aggregate for concrete produced with hydraulic binders in accordance with ÖNORM B 3304 or DIN 1045, but rather is selected in a range that complies with these
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Standards for aggregates is viewed as little or only of limited use. The specific choice of grain according to the invention thus contradicts the conventional views with regard to the cheapest choice of grain for concrete and mortar aggregates.
The building material mixtures produced with the specific grain selection according to the invention can be processed better, and the tendency to segregation is clearly avoided. The building material mixture can also be compacted better. As a result, significantly higher ultimate strengths, in particular a higher compressive strength and a higher bending tensile strength, are achieved.
If sulfur concrete is made with aggregates, the grain composition of which lies within the sieve line range which is recognized as favorable, then the highest strengths are obtained with sulfur contents which, depending on the grain shape (grit, gravel), between 7 and 21% by weight, preferably 19 to 21% by weight. %.
A building material mixture with optimal properties is obtained if the grain composition of the additive lies within the range according to the invention and, in addition, at least one plasticizer, preferably an olefinic hydrocarbon, is mandatory added to the elemental sulfur used as a binder. Such hydrocarbons are those already mentioned above, such as dicyclopentadiene, cyclooctadiene, cyclodecadiene, dipentene, styrene, vinylcyclohexene or mixtures thereof.
This plasticizer changes the properties of the sulfur in such a way that correspondingly plastic-elastic or glass-like products are obtained.
Of these plasticizers, styrene and dicyclopentadiene (DCP) in particular have proven successful. From FR-PS No. 2, 197, 835, coating compositions have become known which contain 73 to 97% by weight of elemental sulfur, 1 to 15% by weight of talc, 1 to 15% by weight of glass fibers and 1 to 7% by weight. -% dicyclopentadiene included. These compositions are used to line pit walls. A supplement with a certain grain spectrum is not described there.
It was found that with the addition of DCP and / or styrene to the sulfur binder, a further improvement in the physico-mechanical properties of the so-called sulfur concrete can be achieved. Depending on the desired strength ratios, a proportion of 1.5 to 10% by weight, preferably 2 to 4% by weight of dicyclopentadiene or 15 to 10% by weight of styrene (preferably 5% by weight) is used. However, two or more plasticizers, mixed together, can also be used.
Such a building material mixture, for example made with DCP-modified sulfur, has a number of more favorable properties than pure sulfur concrete. At certain DCP contents, the reduction of stress concentrations, which result from the transition from the solid monoclinic ss-sulfur to the only orthodynamically stable orthorhombic a-sulfur that is thermodynamically stable at room temperature, leads to significantly higher strengths (see Fig. 2).
With a DCP content of 3% by weight, the compressive strength of the building material mixture reaches a maximum.
As can be seen from FIG. 2, the increase in compressive strength was 3% by weight of DCP in the sulfur binder with granulite as an additive and 16% with basalt as an additive.
As shown in FIG. 3, the bending tensile strength (BZF) increases with increasing content of DCP in the binder. If the BZF of the so-called sulfur concrete without DCP in the binder was 10.2 N / mm2, it was 20.7 N / mm2 with 10% DCP in the binder, which means that an increase in strength of 100% was observed. If the dosage of DCP exceeds the optimum in terms of compressive strength, the bending tensile strength increases. One thus arrives at even more favorable compressive strength / bending tensile strength ratios, as z. B. are desirable for the heaviest loads.
Furthermore, the resistance of the so-called sulfur concrete to abrasion is reduced due to the less brittle binder. The sulfur concrete modified with DCP is also stable in concentrated bases (20% NaOH), whereas normal sulfur concrete would dissolve.
The thermal conductivity is worse, so that there is a better thermal insulation effect.
With flammability tests, self-extinguishing is achieved after a few seconds, while normal sulfur concrete burns completely.
Since DCP acts as a crystallization inhibitor, longer solidification times result for the mixture, which means longer processing intervals and thus better compactibility and lighter weight
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
Manufacture of uniform (void-free) products.
Furthermore, the so-called modified sulfur concrete has greater resistance to frequent frost-immersion changes. A lower thermal expansion is also achieved, which enables reinforcement with steel.
When casting large bodies (hollow bricks), they can be cooled to room temperature shortly after solidification by sprinkling water. With normal sulfur concrete mixes, however, cracks easily form when accelerated cooling.
In the drawings: FIG. 1 shows the sieve line area provided according to the invention for aggregates in building material mixtures of the type mentioned at the beginning, and FIGS. 2 and 3 show a graph of the compressive strength and bending tensile strength achieved.
The following additives can be used: natural sand and gravel, broken aggregates such as limestone, dolomite, basalt, granulite, grit, crushed sand, stone chips), broken or granulated blast furnace slag, granulated waste slag, brick chips (broken bricks and the like). These additives are primarily suitable for the production of heavy sulfur concrete.
The following additives can be used to produce sulfur concrete with a low concrete density: natural pumice, metallurgical pumice (foamed blast furnace slag), expanded clay (Leca), tuff, pearlite and the like. the like
It is also possible to add a certain amount of hydraulic binders, in particular cement, to the aggregate.
In Fig. 1 the cheapest sieving lines according to ÖNORM B 3304 for supplements 0 to 8 mm are entered with 1 and 2. The sieve line area according to the invention lies within lines 3 to 4, the optimally favorable area lying within lines 3 'to 4'. In line 5, grain mixtures which are assembled after this line have a slightly lower void content than in line 4 '. Since the surface area of these grain mixtures per kg of aggregate is significantly higher than that of the 4 'sieve line (26% filler, ie grain fraction smaller than 0.09 mm), the amount of binder (sulfur) for coating the grains must be increased disproportionately compared to the somewhat smaller cavity. to get workable blends.
2 shows the content of dicyclopentadiene based on sulfur on the axis of abscissa and the compressive strengths of the finished product obtained on the axis of ordinate.
The curves determined for basalt and granulite as aggregate are shown.
As can be seen from FIG. 2, the optimum found with regard to the compressive strength is 3% by weight of DCP based on sulfur.
If higher bending tensile strengths are desired, these can be obtained by higher DCP concentrations, but one has to accept a decrease in the compressive strength; this can be seen particularly from FIG. 3.
Depending on the DCP administration and reaction temperature, different changes in viscosity can be observed with sulfur-DCP melts. So you get z. B. with 5 parts DCP / 100 parts by weight sulfur at 1400C and a reaction time of six hours a gelatinous mass that can no longer be mixed with additives.
It is therefore necessary to shorten the reaction times while maintaining the reaction temperature of 140 C at higher DCP doses.
