Recently, because of their useful physical and chemical properties, nematic liquid crystalline compounds or liquid crystalline mixtures have been widely used in display devices and light attenuating devices for electronic and optical instruments. The nematic, liquid-crystalline compounds and mixtures are divided into two groups according to their dielectric anisotropy. The one exhibiting negative dielectric anisotropy is called "Nn liquid crystalline compound" or "Nn liquid crystalline mixture" and the other exhibiting positive dielectric anisotropy is called "Np liquid crystalline compound" or "Np liquid crystalline mixture".
As is known to the person skilled in the art, nematic, liquid-crystalline compounds and mixtures are used in electro-optical display elements, in which their optical appearance is changed by applying and removing an electric field. An example of a liquid crystalline display element is one of the dynamic scattering type DSM (Dynamic Scattering Mode) and another example of this is one of the field effect type, FEM (Field Effect Mode).
From the point of view of practical applicability, the nematic, liquid-crystalline compounds and mixtures should be in the mesomorphic state over a broad temperature range, in particular at low temperatures.
The main aim of the invention is to create new nematic liquid-crystalline mixtures which have a broad temperature range of the mesomorphic state. Such nematic, liquid-crystalline mixtures are characterized according to the invention by a content of at least two cinnamic acid esters of the general formula
EMI1.1
wherein R. is straight-chain alkyl having 4 to 8 carbon atoms, or at least one cinnamic acid ester of the formula (I) and at least one liquid-crystalline cinnamic acid ester, at least one of the formulas
EMI1.2

The nematic, liquid-crystalline mixtures according to the invention are Np liquid-crystalline mixtures and are characterized in that they contain at least one type of p-cyano cinnamic acid p'-n-alkoxyphenyl ester of the formula (I). There are no critical limits or requirements with regard to the number or the mixing ratio of the compounds forming the mixtures.
The nematic, liquid-crystalline mixtures of the invention can be prepared by weighing in the compounds in question, heating to about 1800C in the presence of nitrogen gas to produce an isotropic liquid and then sufficient stirring to mix the constituents.
In another way, the compounds can first be mixed and then heated and stirred.
The Np liquid-crystalline mixtures according to the invention, containing cinnamic acid esters, are characterized by a broad mesomorphic range which includes low temperatures. The mesomorphic range of the Np liquid crystalline mixtures, which consist of a few Np liquid crystalline compounds, is broader than that of the corresponding compounds and is advantageously shifted towards the side of lower temperatures. This is explained by the following description of the examples and by the drawings. The NP liquid-crystalline mixtures according to the invention are valuable as liquid-crystalline materials for display devices of the FEM type.
Example 1: Equal parts by weight of compounds (1) and (2) are heated to 1800C until they have melted into an isotropic liquid, mixed and stirred to form an Np liquid-crystalline mixture

Mixtures are given in Table 5.

Np liquid crystalline compounds which form the mixtures, and it is shifted to the lower temperature side.
Example 2: Equal parts by weight of compounds (3) and (9) are heated separately to 18 ° C. until they have melted to form isotropic liquids. By stirring and mixing the liquids together, an Np liquid-crystalline mixture with the mesomorphic range from 63 to 128, 50C is obtained. Similarly, by mixing at least one of the p-cyano cinnamic acid p'-n-alkoxyphenyl esters represented by the formula (I) and at least one of the esters represented by the formulas (II), (HI) and (IV), various kinds of Np -liquid crystalline mixtures obtained. Table 6 shows the mesomorphic range of the mixtures obtained in this way.
As can be seen from Table 6 and FIGS. 1 to 3, the Np liquid-crystalline mixtures according to the invention have a considerably broad mesomorphic range. The phase diagrams of the Np liquid-crystalline mixtures produced according to the invention by mixing the compounds (4) and (7), the compounds (4) and (13) and the compounds (4) and (19) are shown in FIGS. 1, 2 or 3.
