The present invention relates to liquid crystals, in particular liquid crystalline materials which are used as Working body in electro-optical devices, as anisotropic solvent in spectroscopy, as liquid phase can be used in gas-liquid chromatography.
Einer der Hauptkennwerten eines flüssigkristallinen Materials ist der Temperaturbereich, in dem die Mesophase existent ist, wobei dieser Temperaturbereich in Richtung niedriger Temperaturen vom Übergang in denOne of the main characteristics of a liquid crystalline material is the temperature range in which the mesophase exists, with this temperature range moving in the direction of lower temperatures from the transition to the

Durch Vergrößerung der Anzahl der Bestandteile wird der Temperaturbereich der Mesophase erweitert.solid crystalline state and is limited in the direction of high temperatures by the transition into an ordinary isotropic liquid. Liquid crystalline materials are mixtures of several individual compounds. The temperature range of the mesophase of such a mixture depends on the properties of the constituents of this mixture and their number.
By increasing the number of constituents, the temperature range of the mesophase is expanded.
Freiburger Arbeitstagung »Flüssige Kristalle«, März 1980).However, multi-component mixtures are difficult to manufacture. The transition temperatures especially Promising base mixes that can be used in the production of liquid-crystalline materials can, are given in Table 1 ("Proceeding" 10th Freiburg Working Conference "Liquid Crystals", March 1980).

The main disadvantage of the specified materials lies in the narrow temperature range for the liquid-crystalline State of mesophase and a high melting temperature, thus reducing the use of the materials There are limits, especially in the low temperature range.
The present invention was based on the object of developing a liquid-crystalline material which a wide temperature range of the existence of the nematic mesophase and a low melting point possesses, which enables an expansion of the field of application of the material.
Diese Aufgabe wurde durch die Entwicklung eines flüssigkristallinen Materials gelöst, welches erfindungsgemaß wenigstens zwei 4-n-Alkyl-trans-cyclohexancarbonsäuren der allgemeinen FormelThis object was achieved by developing a liquid-crystalline material which, according to the invention at least two 4-n-alkyl-trans-cyclohexanecarboxylic acids of the general formula

The amount of the specified nitrile can vary between 2 and 25% by weight. The present invention provides liquid-crystalline materials with low melting temperatures (up to minus 34 ° C) and high clearing points (up to plus 93 0 C). The material contains two or three components and is much easier to produce than known liquid crystals. The inventive materials have a high (up to 10 0hm n · m) resistivity and a zero value close to dielectric anisotropy. This allows these materials to be used as basic materials in the production of liquid-crystalline mixtures for electro-optical devices which are operated using both dynamic light scattering and field orientation effects.
The liquid-crystalline material according to the invention is obtained practically by mixing the stated constituents in the stated percentages by weight with subsequent heating of the mixture produced to a temperature exceeding the clearing point of the same by 5 to 10 ° C. with subsequent cooling to room temperature.
