Method for re-tensioning the inclined bars in iron bridges and the like
Structures.
In the case of iron bridges or similar structures, the diagonal bars, which over time. to become slack, to tighten again, has so far usually been done in such a way that they were removed and riveted again after the difference in length after being heated in the forge by compression on the anvil. This procedure is not only time-consuming and costly, but it often requires a complete cessation of operations on the bridge or at least endangers it.
These disadvantages are avoided if the thermite process known for the butt welding of individual iron bars is used to cut the inclined bars in the building itself
EMI1.1
Cross section along the line C-D of FIG. 1.
Clamping jaws c made of steel, which are notched like a vice, are attached to any two points on the inclined bar a and clamped by screws b. A two-part mold e is placed between these jaws, which surrounds the rod and is held by handles g. A strong heat-generating agent (e.g. thermite), which has previously been ignited in a crucible and brought into flow, is poured into the mold c through the opening f and fills the free space between the rod and the mold sealed with clay out. As a result, the inclined rod is placed in incandescent heat over a short, sharply defined distance.
The clamping jaws c are then brought closer to one another by tightening the clamping screws d connecting them, the iron rod being compressed at the heated point and thus shortened by the necessary amount.
In many cases it will be unnecessary to use the screws connecting the clamping jaws
