 Reduction cannot be destroyed.

Example 4: As an example of the application of the reduction of inorganic substances, the reduction of iron oxide salts to oxide salts is given. If solutions of ferric chloride are boiled with bisulfite and formic acid, reduction takes place with discoloration of the liquid, which the two substances cannot do individually. The same is the case with technical iron, wood acetic acid, an almost black solution of partially oxidized acetic iron oxide. This property is of practical importance in printing, e.g. B. when printing iron chamois, steam alizarin violet, etc. In these processes the iron salts must be used as oxide salts, since the oxide salts do not combine with the fiber.

Since the oxide salts oxidize themselves very easily in the air, making the printing inks unusable or giving poorly fixed prints, massively adds arsonic acid sodium or copper arsenite as a reducing agent. These toxic and expensive salts can advantageously be replaced by salts of sulphurous acid and formic acid.
