Behind the screen is the combustion chamber U with fire bridge V, along the inclined front surface TV of which the gases sweep as they exit the mixing chamber.
After exiting the combustion chamber, the gases escape through the boiling tube X into the smoke box or smoke tubes.
A pipe Z with a two-way handle Y leads up along the ceiling of the furnace to the screen D and then goes downwards to connect to branch pipes Al, which run up along the walls of the mixing chamber and end in downwardly directed perforated pipes Bl. Water or steam can be let into the pipe Z through the tap Y; in the first case, wet steam flows into the mixing chamber in the latter case, superheated steam and is distributed in a suitable manner through the pipes BI.
After the fire has been lit, it is spread over the main grate and the side grids and the flames, smoke and other unburned material rise up and strike against the screen D, which is very hot, brushing them

and meet the likewise heated air flowing into the lower part of this chamber after steam has been supplied to them on the way. Air, gases and steam mix intimately with one another within the mixing chamber and the mixture enters the combustion chamber, where it first hits the sloping front wall of the fire bridge

With some types of coal and under special conditions only water is allowed to flow into the pipe Z, under other circumstances only steam is allowed to enter.
