In Fig. 2d all fingers are displaced by one contact compared to Fig. 2a, the resistance is 99. As you can see, main has almost three times as many contact levels as there are contacts. There are not quite three times as many stages because the intermediate stages cannot be produced on either side during the last contacts.

If the individual resistance levels were not all the same, but increased to one side, the numerical proportions would change somewhat, but two intermediate levels would almost always be possible after each main level.

In Fig. 3 the case is shown that only one of the lateral contact fingers can be adjusted relative to the middle one, u. between the one turned away from the second power supply,
 EMI2.4
the finger c moves from the position c 'indicated by the dashed lines to the left, then the switched-on resistor assumes the following values in sequence, whereby the
 EMI2.5
was only entitled to a little. The steps from 99.5 to 100 can be reached more easily if contact finger b is also adjustable. If the latter is set to contact-9, the following resistances are obtained depending on the position of c:
 EMI2.6
creates two branches by arranging four or more contact fingers. These can be fixed or movable relative to one another.

Of course, a suitable shape is also necessary here, particularly with regard to the contact division.

If you add the resistance z. B. according to Fig. 4 a d with five fixed to each other

conductively connected. but are isolated from the other group and which have the widths and distances that can be seen in the figure, one obtains
 EMI2.8
one again has an unbranched circuit as in FIG. 4 a or G a and the switched-on resistor is 1.0: all fingers are now shifted by a whole contact pitch. As you can see, with a large number of contacts you get almost four times as many steps as there are contacts.

   PATENT CLAIMS:
1. Resistance regulator with three contact fingers, of which the two lateral fingers are conductively connected to one another, but the middle one is connected to one of the power supply lines
 EMI2.9
The contact finger can be adjusted relative to the middle one, for the purpose of achieving a greater number of resistance steps than twice the number of contacts.
