Früher wurden Leitungsschutzschalter nach VDE 0641 vorwiegend sowohl für 380 V Wechselspannung als auch für 250 V Gleichspannung hergestellt und verwendet. Im Zuge der Verkleinerung der Geräte nach DIN 43 234 bzw. DIN 43 880, Entwurf Januar 1975, werden Leitungsschutzschalter nur noch für 380 V Wechselspannung gebaut. Ihre Verwendung ist auf niedrigere Werte der Gleichspannung weit unter dem in VDE 0641 genormten Wert von 250 V Gleichspannung beschränkt, weil diese Geräte in Gleichstromkreisen mit diesen Betriebsspannungen, Stromwerte wenig oberhalb des Nennstromes nicht einwandfrei abschalten können.
