<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Process for the continuous production of a fibrous, tubular insulating body and device for its implementation
EMI1.1
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
the smaller base of the truncated cone through the cross-sectional area of the dome and the larger
Base is determined by the area of the circle enclosed by the elongated edge of the wound tape. The wound tape is continuously moved axially along the mandrel, pulled off the latter and cut to length in the desired manner.
If the band is warped, as mentioned, it will no longer be able to lie in a straight line, but rather run along a curved line. The radius of the curvature is expediently chosen so that the
The ratio of the lengths of the inner and outer edges of the band corresponds to the ratio of the inner and outer diameters of the desired tubular material, i. h., des
Diameter of the coaxial inner and outer helical winding, which is formed by these edges, which are or are wound adjacent to the mandrel or on the outer surface of the tube.
It has been found that the overlap of the windings is advantageously far greater than half
Bandwidth is. The thickness of the tube will then be at least twice and generally an even greater multiple of the thickness of the strip.
In order to produce the desired frustoconical winding from the fibrous tape, it is forcibly fed tangentially to the mandrel at an angle which corresponds to the slope of the truncated cone which the winding forms.
The described different pulling of the tape is expediently achieved by advancing or feeding the originally straight fibrous tape around and in circumferential relation with one or a number of conical rollers, one edge of the tape being made to follow a path which is longer than the distance traveled by the opposite edge, the
Taper and the number of rollers can be chosen with regard to the degree of the desired
Warpage of the belt. If the thickness of the insulating material is to be considerable, it is impossible to obtain a sufficiently different tensile effect without tearing the tape. Therefore, in such a case, several overlapping bands must be provided.
In one embodiment, a cover tape, preferably made of impermeable material, is wound over the helically wound tape. This shroud is used to give the pipe an essentially cylindrical outer surface. The cover tape can consist of thermoplastic fibers and the cylindrical shape can be achieved by a pressure acting radially on the outer surface of the roll below.
In one embodiment, a thermosetting binder evenly distributed in the straight stretched tape is cured in the wound structure.
A warm gas is preferably used for curing, which exits through openings in the wall of the hollow dome and penetrates the tape during winding, reducing the adhesive strength of the tape roll on the mandrel. The gas pressure is best chosen so that the wound tube is lifted from the latter in the area of the holes in the dome and can be continuously withdrawn by means known per se.
The outer surface of the unwound tape is advantageously smoothed under pressure, this expediently taking place simultaneously with the winding of the tape onto the mandrel.
The invention also relates to a device for carrying out the method, which is essentially characterized in that at least one roller frame with conical rollers and a rotating mandrel including at least one with this are attached to a feed device for the band in the running direction of the band the winding point of co-operating conical roller with a running axis inclined towards the mandrel closes, whereupon at least one further winding device, possibly a heat curing chamber, a surface smoothing device, which consists of at least one smoothing roller co-operating with the mandrel and in the conveying direction of the wound strip or the resulting tubular structure, is attached a cutting device for cutting individual pipe sections to length.
This device is advantageously designed so that the wall of the hollow dome has openings over part of its length and that the dome is connected to a hot gas source. This makes it much easier to detach the wound tube from the dome.
In the drawings, the invention is explained in more detail on the basis of exemplary embodiments. 1 shows a view of a complete device for carrying out the method according to the invention, FIGS. 2 and 3 partly in longitudinal section, partly in view of the fibrous strip material wound in a helical manner, covered all around and hardened and partly removed from the mandrel, FIG. 4 the essential steps and means for pulling the tape differently and for winding it up helically, FIG. 5 is a simplified plan view of FIG

amounts.
The stated values as well as the width-L-of the tape and the pitch-A-of the winding on the mandrel can be changed to any desired elongation of the lower edge - 14b - compared to the upper edge - 14a - of the tape with deformation of the same to achieve.
It is best to set the ratio of the lengths of the edges 14b: 14a of the band approximately in accordance with the ratio between the outer and inner diameter of the pipe to be produced. This is achieved when the tape - 14 - is stretched so that it is bent sideways as shown at --14 '- in Fig. 4, the radius - Rb - of its lower edge - -14b - relates to the radius - Ra - of the inner edge - 14a - as the diameter - D - relates to the diameter --d--.
There are several pairs of conical rollers - 28 and 29 - which have their larger base on the side of the belt that is to be elongated. The arrangement and mode of operation of the stretching device are illustrated in FIGS. 4 to 6, in which, in some cases
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
drawn band part is shown. The stretching results from the fact that the edge - 14b - des
Belt is forced to run around said conical rollers - 28 and 29 - being
Path is longer than the path that is traversed by the edge - 14a - of the tape.
In the drawings, for the sake of simplicity, only two pairs of conical rollers - 28, 29 - are shown, which have a relatively large conicity. In practice, however, numerous pairs of rollers with a very low taper are used. This will make the fibrous
Volume very gradually adapted to the different elongation and there is a rapid change in the
Degree of stretching possible by running the belt along and around only part of the rollers.
In order to achieve a gradually increasing stretching, the roller pairs can have different conicity.
While in FIG. 4 the belt and the conical rollers are shown lying horizontally, in practice they can also be arranged perpendicular to the general direction of advance of the belt, as shown in FIGS. 1, 5 and 6. The rollers can be driven individually or jointly by means of a conventional motor and transmission means (not shown) in order to facilitate the advance of the strip.
For the purpose of a more precise adjustment of the stretching of the tape, the inclination of the axes of one or more rollers can be changed.
In Figs. 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 designate - 20 - the finished wound and covered pipe, --20 '- (Fig. 7 to 9) the finished wound but not yet covered pipe, -23- ( Fig. 2 and 7) the casing and --30-- the cavity of the pipe, which becomes free when pulling off the end part - 25-- of the mandrel --15--.
The stretched tape --14 '- is forcibly fed to the dome --15 - by conical rollers 16 and 17 arranged directly next to it and wound onto it.
The conicity of these rollers and the inclination of their axes with respect to the dome-15- are selected in such a way that the desired gradient - A - results for the successive winding of the tape on the mandrel. The overlap of the laps is determined by the ratio of the speed-V- (Fig. 4) at which the stretched tape --14 '- is continuously fed, and the speed-M- (Fig. 4) at which the wound Tape is axially pulled off the dome --15--.
The speed of rotation of the dome - 15 - is set so that its peripheral speed is equal to or slightly greater than the linear speed of the shorter upper edge - 14a - of the belt - 14 '-. The setting of the device can be made in individual cases by the simplest calculations and manual experiments.
The inner wall of the pipe is formed by the dome --15 -. The inner or upper edge --14a-- of the tape is smoothed out. In contrast, the outer wall of the tube initially has steps (FIG. 7). In addition to the generally desirable removal of these steps, the surface of the tube is wrapped with the shroud 22 or smoothed under pressure. Both measures are preferably used at the same time.
According to FIG. 7, rollers 40 and 41 are provided for this purpose, which are best offset by 180 and press smoothly onto the surface of the pipe. In the case of one of these rollers (e.g. roller - 40--) the shroud tape --22-- can be fed, as is illustrated in FIG. 8.
In the arrangement according to FIG. 7, the rollers - 40 and 41 - have a broken edge at their upper end part in order to facilitate the feeding of the tube provided with steps.
In the embodiment according to FIG. 8, the rollers are mounted on swing arms -42, 43-, opposite the mandrel -15-, and are arranged in such a way that they are already in place while the pipe is being formed
EMI4.1
According to FIG. 9, rollers 40 ', 41' can be provided, the front part of which is concave, the generating line of the lateral surface being in particular a parabola. Such a thrust effect can also be achieved in that the axes of the rollers --40, 41-- are inclined against the axis of the dome --15--.
Referring to Figures 2 and 3, the sequence of operations in the manufacture of the tube along the mandrel is shown
