<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

the cylinder is immediately ready for use. In the end positions of the piston, however, complete tightness is achieved due to the seal according to the invention. The provided O-ring also fits tightly against uneven, conical or slightly inclined surfaces, so that a special guide for the piston can be omitted, since a secure seal is guaranteed even if the piston in the cylinder is slightly inclined due to its play represents. If the compressed O-ring is also in sealing contact with the circumference of the cylinder, the seal between the piston and cylinder takes place at two points and is therefore particularly secure.
Finally, the cylinder according to the invention has the further advantage that incorrect switching caused by so-called leakage currents, which z. B. occur in leaky control valves, can be avoided. Due to the floating bearing of the piston, any leakage currents are diverted as leakage losses and the piston is only moved by a correspondingly strong pressure medium pulse.
The arrangement of a seal in an end position of the piston is known in a single-acting pneumatic piston drive in which the piston consists of piston stages which can be pushed into one another in the direction of movement and whose movement is limited by stops provided on the inner circumference of the cylinder. The seal consists of a flat sealing ring inserted in the end wall of the cylinder, against which the innermost piston step rests with its end face in the end position of the piston.
However, such a seal is only slightly elastic and, in contrast to the embodiment according to the invention, together with a cantilevered piston, is unfavorable because it does not ensure a tight seal if the face of the piston is uneven or if it rests unevenly on the sealing ring due to the piston being inclined
In the drawing, the invention is explained in more detail using an exemplary embodiment which shows an embodiment of the cylinder according to the invention in axial center section.
In the exemplary embodiment, the cylinder with the piston is designated with -2 and the piston rod with -3-. The piston --2-- is cantilevered in the cylinder --1--, an exact fit is not required and the clearance between piston and cylinder is chosen so that a practically frictionless displacement of the piston is possible at any time. No seal is provided between the cylinder bore and the jacket of the piston, so that when the piston is displaced there is no friction caused by sealing elements.
The cylinder - 1 - is designed like a cap and is screwed onto a cylindrical extension - 4 - of a housing, not shown, in which, for example, a control valve can be arranged, which is driven by the piston - 2 - via the piston rod --3- - is operated. The piston rod - 3 - is guided in the cylindrical extension --4-- in which a vent hole --5-- is provided for the adjacent cylinder space. The end of the piston rod - 3 - is mounted in a recess --6-- of the piston --2-- and is supported on two O-rings -7- which compensate for manufacturing tolerances in the length of the piston rod-3 and at the same time damping of the switching movement is achieved.
On the end face of the piston - 2 - from which the piston rod - 3 - extends, a dovetail-shaped ring groove - 8 - is provided, in which an O-ring 9 is inserted. This
EMI2.1
In the drawing to the left, the O-ring-9-rests against the cylindrical extension-4, which closes the cylinder-l - at the front, and thereby seals the piston in the end position of the piston-2 against the cylinder-l . When the outer circumference of the O-ring -9- comes close enough to the cylinder bore, in the end position of the piston-2-, when it is pressed together, it also rests against the cylinder bore, so that a seal also takes place at this point. In this case, a separate seal between the cylinder - 1 - and the cylindrical extension --4-- is not necessary.
The piston - 2 - is moved by a pneumatic or hydraulic pressure medium, which is fed through a connection bore --10-- provided in the opposite end wall of the cylinder --1--, to which a pressure medium line
EMI2.2
The piston - 2 - can thus be displaced practically without friction in the cylinder - 1 - without being hindered by sealing elements due to low actuation forces. As soon as the piston --2-- reaches the end position opposite the cylinder chamber --11-- acted upon by the pressure medium, the provided seal between the end face of the piston and the end wall of the cylinder becomes effective, so that in the switching position of the piston a complete seal is achieved.
That during the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
only a short reversing time between the cylinder --1-- and the piston --2-- at most as leakage loss pressure medium does not cause any disadvantageous consequences and is caused by the vent hole --5-- or by the play between the piston rod --3- - and the cylindrical extension - 4 - easily removed.
In the same way as in the cylinder with single-acting piston shown in the exemplary embodiment, the measure according to the invention can also be applied to cylinders with double-acting pistons. In this case a seal is provided on each side of the piston.
