Process for the preparation of mixtures of acrolein and acrylic acid or methacrolein and methacrylic acid and a catalyst for carrying out this process
The invention relates to new and useful catalysts and to new and useful catalysts and to a process for the preparation of unsaturated aldehydes and unsaturated carboxylic acids by oxidizing unsaturated hydrocarbons at elevated temperature. The invention represents a further development of the invention according to patent no. 261564. This patent relates to a process for the preparation of mixtures of acrolein and acrylic acid or methacrolein and methacrylic acid, by oxidation of samples or
Isobutene in the presence of catalysts, which process is characterized in that a gas mixture whose components have a molar ratio of 1 mol of the aforementioned monoolefin to 1.5 to 4 mol of oxygen in an oxygen-containing gas and up to 7 mol of water vapor per mol of the monoolefin , passes through a catalyst bed at a temperature of about 325 to about 5000C, the catalyst being essentially the molar feed

material atoms is connected and the ratio Mn: P is in a range from 5 Mn: 6 P to 3 Mn: 2 P.
The invention relates in particular to catalysts based on a mixture of manganese molybdate, tellurium oxide and manganese phosphate in a molar ratio of 100 MnMoO., 10 to 100 TeO, and 10 to 50 Mn, PO, as well as a process for the production of acrolein or methacrolein in high yields together with Acrylic acid or methacrylic acid with passing over vapors of propylene or isobutylene and an oxygen-containing gas over the catalyst at a temperature of about 325 to

where P is in the form of a phosphate, i.e. H. each phosphorus atom is bonded to 3 to 4 oxygen atoms.
In proposals not previously published, catalysts are described which have a long period of activity and make it possible to use a substantial amount, in particular more than 50% per pass, of a gaseous monoolefin, such as propylene or isobutylene, with the formation of acrolein, meth-

Oxidation of olefins at similar temperatures yields much higher acrolein than can be achieved with either of these two catalysts alone. With the catalyst and in the method according to the invention, in which manganese is present both as molybdate and as phosphate, we can

degrees of efficiency, expressed in mole percent, from about 45 to about 55 can be obtained for the aldehyde.
The reaction components are
1. propylene or isobutylene and
2. an oxygen-containing gas, which can be pure oxygen, oxygen diluted with an inert gas, air enriched with oxygen, or air without additional oxygen. For economic reasons, air is the preferred oxygen-containing reactant.
For the purposes of the invention, the hydrocarbons to be oxidized can be represented by the general formula
EMI2.1
from which it can also be seen that the end products formed by the oxidation only
EMI2.2
The stoichiometric ratio of oxygen to olefin in the context of the invention is 1.5: 1.
The molar ratio of oxygen to olefin should be at least 2: 1. Somewhat smaller amounts of oxygen can also be used, but with a loss in yield. There is no critical upper limit when using air, but the use of large excesses causes high investment costs. It is preferred to use an oxygen excess of 33 to 660/0. An appropriate range is between 1.5 and 4 moles of oxygen per mole of olefin. A higher excess does not adversely affect the yield of aldehydes and acids, but for practical reasons an excess well over 10010 is not to be recommended because this would require an extremely large apparatus for a given production capacity.
The introduction of steam into the reactor along with the hydrocarbon and oxygen-containing gas is desirable, but not absolutely necessary. The action of the steam is not clear, but it appears to reduce the amount of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide in the gases flowing out.
Other diluent gases can also be used. Saturated hydrocarbons such as propane are quite inert under the reaction conditions. If desired, nitrogen, argon, krypton, or other known inert gases can be used as diluents, but they are not preferred in view of the additional cost involved.
Various methods can be used to prepare the catalyst, which can be supported or free. Each individual starting component can be dissolved in water and then combined with one another in the form of their aqueous solutions, or the components can be mixed dry with one another. Since the dissolving process achieves a much more even mixing, this is preferred.
A general procedure for making a catalyst is to add the required amount of manganese molybdate to water and prepare a tellurium compound and manganese salt in water. The necessary amount of phosphoric acid is then added to the manganese salt solution. The tellurium compound is added to the manganese molybdate, and then the mixture of manganese salt and phosphoric acid is added to the mixture of manganese molybdate and tellurium compound. The catalyst is then dried and heated at 4000C for about 16 hours.
Supported catalysts can be prepared by adding an aqueous slurry of the support material to the aqueous solution of the catalyst; however, the aqueous catalyst components can also be added to a slurry of the support material.
Optionally, a slurry of the catalyst ingredients in water can also be prepared, which is then dried and burned. To obtain supported catalysts, the aqueous slurry of the catalyst constituents can be added to an aqueous suspension of the support or vice versa, followed by drying and heating.
Another method is to combine the dry ingredients and then mix them together carefully. The main difficulty lies in achieving thorough mixing and a uniform particle size.
A specific procedure for preparing the catalysts is given below.
