Process for the production of unsaturated polyester resins
EMI1.1
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
EMI2.1
According to the invention it was found that the partial or total replacement of phthalic anhydride by this adduct in the production of the above-mentioned unsaturated, cured polyester resins significantly increases their heat resistance without causing brittleness. The resins which can be prepared by the new process therefore meet both the requirement for high heat resistance and that for good mechanical properties.
According to the invention, similar to the known processes, the straight-chain polyester is first produced by reacting equimolecular amounts of glycol with dicarboxylic acid anhydrides. A mixture of an unsaturated component such as maleic anhydride and a saturated component in a ratio of 1: 3 to 3: 1 is used as the acid anhydride component. Either the ß-naphthol-maleic anhydride adduct itself or the adduct mentioned together with the phthalic anhydride in any ratio serves as the saturated component.
The reaction mixture is brought to a temperature of about 200 to 210 ° C. in an inert gas atmosphere and kept at this temperature until it has an acid number of about 30 to 40, which corresponds to a conversion of about 90 to 94%. The thermoplastic resin obtained in this way is then copolymerized with styrene, the amount of styrene used being from 30 to 36 parts by weight per 70 to 64 parts by weight of polyester. The process takes place in the presence of about 1.3% benzoyl peroxide at a temperature of about 1150 C within a few hours, followed by 1 hour, during which the temperature is increased to about 1500 C.
Example: One gramol of the adduct of maleic anhydride and s-naphthol, 3 gramol maleic anhydride and 4 gramol diethylene glycol were heated to about 2050 ° C. for 8 hours. The straight-chain polyester obtained had an acid number of 33 and was copolymerized with styrene, where-
