and be carefully monitored and interrupted immediately if the fiber shows a tendency to advance. After the treatment with acid, the fiber can optionally be washed with water and then the material is treated with an aqueous solution of calcined soda with a specific gravity of about 1015 at a pressure of 14 atm. not exceeding pressure, treated for about an hour. The solution can be used boiling hot.
This treatment not only neutralizes any trace of acid, but also continues the dissolution of the cockroach's cell binding agent and causes the shives to be further crushed and at the same time completed the bleaching. Finally the material is washed with water.
After the above operations have been carried out, the shives are mostly still so large that they are a hindrance to the processing of the product, and are therefore completely broken down into fine fibers that after the last-described washing with water, the treatment with the acid bath and the treatment with soda solution can follow one or more times in the specified order, the concentration of the solutions being chosen to be weaker for each subsequent repetition of these operations than for the previous one. The treatment of the matorial is to be regarded as ended when the cockroaches have completely disappeared, i. i. have been comminuted into fine fibers evenly distributed in the material.
If the bleaching of the mass is not desired, the bleaching bath can be omitted,
