EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

Galvanic baths for the electrolytic deposition of bright to shiny tin layers
The invention relates to galvanic baths for the electrolytic deposition of bright to shiny tin layers on the cathode, which baths consist essentially of a solution of a tin salt, free acid, a nonionic wetting agent and other additives which are described below. It is known to use electrolytes for the electrolytic deposition of bright to shiny tin layers, which are obtained by adding wetting agents, wood tar or wood tar fractions to tin salt solutions containing free acid. However, these baths have the disadvantage that it is difficult to keep them in a steady operating state that is useful for technical purposes.
The gloss effect and the gloss diffusion effect of the baths that can be achieved with baths of this type often leave something to be desired.
It is already known to use a tin sulfate electrolyte containing phenolsulfonic acid with the addition of formalin or other aromatic and / or heterocyclic aldehydes to produce tin deposits. The gloss effect that can be achieved with such a bath is only slight, but does not meet the expectations placed on a glossy tin layer today. It is also already known to produce tin coatings from acidic tin baths by adding basic nitrogen compounds such as aniline and toluidine in addition to an aldehyde to the electrolytes. Such a bath, especially containing amines together with aldehydes, is, however, likewise not able to generate high-gloss tin deposits.
The aim of the invention is to create an electroplating bath of the type described at the outset which can be kept in a uniformly good operating condition over a long period of time and ensures a good gloss effect of the deposited tin layers with good gloss distribution.
A trouble-free electroplating bath of this type is characterized according to the invention in that the bath solution contains unsaturated compounds of the general formula X-CH = CH-Y in which X is an isocyclic or heterocyclic, optionally substituted ring and Y is one of the atomic groups -H, -CHO, -COOH, -CH OH, -R, -OR or-COR, and where R is an alkyl or alkylene radical with optionally further functional groups, as well as formalin and / or an imidazoline derivative of the following general formula
EMI1.1
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
be added, in which R is an alkyl radical with at least 5 carbon atoms, R2 is hydrogen or the group-CH. COOR and R is hydrogen or a monovalent metal atom.
As unsaturated compounds of the general formula
X-CH = CH-Y unsaturated ketones have proven particularly useful. However, other compounds of the general formula mentioned can also be used. A selection is given below from the compounds which are active according to the invention.

This selection in no way limits the number of compounds which can be used for the deposition of bright to shiny tin layers, but rather serves as evidence that various compounds of the general formula mentioned can be used to produce a well-functioning bath according to the invention. Nonionic wetting agents and formalin and, instead of formalin, imidazoline, its derivatives are used as additives to achieve the gloss effect, together with the unsaturated compounds mentioned.
Especially when an imidazoline derivative represented by the following general formula is added
EMI2.2
one has been able to achieve an excellent gloss spreading power. In this general formula,
EMI2.3
however, means cannot be omitted even if the derivatives mentioned are used. However, it has been found that imidazoline and in particular the imidazoline derivatives described can partially or completely replace the addition of formalin, the range of gloss scattering of the baths being further improved.
The imidazoline derivatives show signs of the described effectiveness even at very low concentrations of only 0.01 g / l and develop the optimum of the desired effect at concentrations between about 0.05-2 g / l. At higher concentrations, no improving, but also no damaging effect was observed in the solubility range.
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
The tin content and free acid content of the electrolytes can be varied within wide limits, the most favorable concentrations of the individual bath components being coordinated with one another in each individual case. Electrolytes with 10-100 g / l tin and 20-200 g / l free acid, calculated as sulfuric acid, can in the presence of non-ionic wetting agents with the claimed compounds of the general formula
X-CH = CH-Y and the stated additives at a suitable temperature and current density deliver cathodically bright to shiny tin deposits.
As wetting agents of the nonionic type, those with 10 to 30 C H 0 groups in the molecule have proven to be particularly suitable for the bath according to the invention. Wetting agents of this type are usually ethers composed of an alkyl, aryl or aralcyl radical containing at least 5C atoms with a polyoxyethylene chain containing the specified number of C2H4O groups.
In most cases, adding pyrocatechol (O-dioxybenzene), which is already known as an antioxidant for tin baths, has a beneficial effect on the gloss formation and the durability of bright tin baths of the type described here.
The base electrolytes of the baths used can be built up on the basis of sulfuric acid, fluoboric acid or cresol or phenol sulfonic acid, which is known for the production of tin baths. However, it is also possible to use electrolytes which contain several of the anions mentioned together. In the following, some exemplary embodiments for compositions of the electroplating bath according to the invention are mentioned, without thereby restricting the scope of the invention. Examples 1-11 show examples of practical bath compositions using the unsaturated compounds of the formula

Examples 17 and 18 show that if a sufficient amount of the imidazoline derivative is used, the formalin content can be completely eliminated.
<Desc / Clms Page number 8>
In the following examples 19-21 it is shown that an original formalin content of 1.5 g / l (example 19) can be achieved by successive addition of an imidazoline derivative over a formalin content of 0.8 g / l (example 20) down to a formalin content of 0 g / l (Example 21) can be reduced.
Example 19:
30 g / l tin as tin sulfate
110 g / l free sulfuric acid
6 g / l non-ionic wetting agent with
15 C2H4O groups in the molecule
0.26g / l benzalacetone 1.5 g / l formalin Bath temperature: 20 ..... 300C
Current density: 0.5 ... 4A / dm2
Example 20:
30 g / l tin as tin sulfate
110 g / l free sulfuric acid
6 g / l non-ionic wetting agent with approx. 15 C2H4O molecules
0.26 g / l benzalacetone 0.8 g / l formalin

but 1.0 g / l of said imidazoline derivative was added and the formalin was omitted. An examination of the tin coatings deposited with the baths of Examples 19-21 showed that the gloss range of the bath increased significantly to the extent that formalin was replaced by imidazoline derivatives.
PATENT CLAIMS:
