Phenols show superior estrogenic effects.
It has now been found that, under the conditions described in the parent patent, new ethers of 3-hydroxy-estra-1, 3, 5-trienes are obtained which have a greater effect than the corresponding free hydroxysteroids.
The new compounds which can be prepared hereby are characterized by the following general formula

The new cyclopentyl ethers are prepared in accordance with the process of the parent patent in such a way that the corresponding 3-hydroxy-estatriene or its sodium salt is reacted with a cyclopentyl halide in the presence of a condensing agent. An alkali metal hydroxide, carbonate or alcoholate can advantageously be used as the condensing agent.
The superior estrogenic effect of the ethers obtained according to the invention in comparison to the

It has been shown to cause proliferation of the uterus in female immature mice. Animals 20-23 days old and weighing about 10 g were used. The compounds dissolved in sesame oil were administered orally at various dosages once a day for 3 days in succession. The animals were then sacrificed and the weight of the uterus of the treated and untreated animals was determined on a rotary balance. The increase in the weight of the uterus is considered an index of uterotrophic effect.
The following table shows the relative uterotrophic effectiveness of some cyclopentyl ethers which can be prepared according to the invention, based on the corresponding hydroxy compounds and also on oestrone as a unit.
