"Chemistry and Industry", 21 [1961], S. 686-688).

<Desc/Clms Page number 5>

Process for the separation of trialkylaluminum growth products by distillation
The invention relates to a process for separating trialkylaluminum growth products by distillation, which have been prepared from alkylaluminum compounds and low molecular weight α-olefins, have a statistical alkyl chain length distribution characterized by Poisson's equation and contain 2-30 carbon atoms per alkyl radical, in at least two fractions with non-statistical distribution of alkyl groups.
A frequently described process for the production of olefins is based in its first stage on the reaction of an alkylaluminum compound such as triethylaluminum with a low molecular weight olefin such as ethylene, a growth product being formed which consists of trialkylaluminum compounds whose alkyl groups differ largely in molecular weight. The growth reaction can be illustrated by the following equation:
EMI1.1
wherein x, y, and z represent integers between 0 and about 14, and wherein x + y + z = n. The growth reaction is z. B. by passing ethylene in triethylaluminum, preferably in the presence of a diluent, carried out under very different reaction conditions, for. B. at 65 - 1550C and 14-350 atmospheres, preferably at 90-1200C and 70-240 atmospheres.
If triethylaluminum is also preferred, other low molecular weight aluminum alkyls such as tri-n-propylaluminum, tri-n-butylaluminum, triisobutylaluminum, diethylaluminum hydride, ethylaluminum dihydride, etc. can also be used.
It is known that the growth reaction follows a statistical distribution of the alkyl chain lengths, which is characterized by Poisson's equation as follows:
EMI1.2
where P (n) represents the probability with which a certain hydrocarbon residue is formed by n additions of ethylene to an aluminum-ethyl bond, and where m is the mean value of the ethylene additions per grown chain.
An example of the distribution achieved in the growth reaction is given in the following table:

The special product mixture in this table shows a maximum at C10. It is possible to achieve a maximum below or above C by changing the reaction conditions; however, the geometry of the alkyl distribution is generally determined by Poisson's relationship, u. betw. regardless of the reaction conditions.
If an olefin, an alcohol, a sulfinic acid, a boron trialkyl compound or some other derivative is to be produced from the growth product, then one must accept the entire distribution of the chain lengths as it is in the growth product. In economic terms, this means that undesirable products have to be accepted, i. H. Products of lesser value to get the products you want.
In such cases, it would be desirable to have a method which yields a non-statistical growth product.
The essence of the invention is that the trialkylaluminum growth product is obtained by continuous distillation under a pressure between about 0.001 and 5 torr at a temperature between about 0 and 200 ° C. and an average residence time of the trialkylaluminum compounds in the distillation zone between about 0.001 and 2 sec is decomposed.
It was previously believed that trialkylaluminum compounds, especially those with larger alkyl radicals, would be converted into dialkylaluminum hydrides on heating. Furthermore, no boiling points of aluminum alumina (from tri-n-hexylaluminum upwards) were given in the literature. For a long time it was believed that tri-n-butylaluminum was the highest molecular weight aluminum alkyl that could be distilled. It has been found, however, that it is possible using the process according to the invention to selectively separate aluminum alkyl compounds from the growth product and to obtain fractions which are highly concentrated in alkyl groups in a relatively narrow molecular weight range.
For example, a growth product with alkyl groups of 2 to 20 carbon atoms and a maximum of 10 carbon atoms can be separated

manufactured.
500 ml of the growth product with a content of 16 vol. -0/0 isooctane were subjected to centrifugal molecular distillation. The product to be distilled is distributed in a heated and rapidly rotating conical evaporator by the action of centrifugal force to form a film which extends over the inner surface of the evaporator and is evaporated from this, the distillate in a condenser connected to the evaporator and the residue can be collected in a channel around the outer edge of the rotating evaporator. The residence time in the distillation zone is about 1 second (cf. "Chemistry and Industry", 21 [1961], pp. 686-688). The solvent isooctane and other volatile substances were removed by gentle heating under vacuum.
The temperature of the rotor was then increased to about 80 ° C., whereupon aluminum alkyl began to distill off under a pressure of less than 0.02 torr. The distillation was continued with continuous or intermittent recycling of the undistilled material until 31% by weight of the alkylaluminum content had distilled out.
The composition of the mixtures was determined by gas chromatographic analysis of the hydrolysis products:

The values in the table above show that the distillate had grown by an additional m value of 1.76 (the m value indicates the average number of ethylene units added to each alkylaluminum compound). Example 4: An aluminum alkyl growth product became by reaction of ethylene with triethylaluminum in isooctane at 105 atmospheres and 119.5 ° C. for three hours.
To remove the solvent and light olefins, the growth product was pre-distilled in batches. The growth product was then distilled in a molecular distillation apparatus; the latter consists of a cylindrical vessel, the inner surface of which forms the evaporator and which contains a rotating central shaft which carries a wiper. The apparatus is heated by means of a heating coil that surrounds the outside of the evaporator cylinder. In operation the to be distilled
<Desc / Clms Page number 5>
Liquid is supplied at the top of the evaporator and flows downwards over the evaporator surface.
The wipers located on the rotatable shaft move all around while touching the evaporator surface and promote the formation of an evenly thin layer of the downward flowing liquid film, while at the same time the surface is kept free of deposits and accumulations. A typical example of such a thin film evaporator can be found in "Molecular Distillation" by G. Burrows, Clarendon Press, Oxford, 1960, pp. 147-149. The temperature of the distillation was increased by an external electrical resistance heater, and the growth product was distilled under reduced pressure. Two trials (24-11 and 25-23) were carried out with the undivided growth product.
A starting material was obtained for six further experiments in which the volatile olefin content was reduced by distillation.
The experimental conditions are given in Table V, and the mixtures used and the products obtained are given in Table VI. A + means that decomposition begins here.

The distillate of this vacuum distillation (total 13.0 g) was analyzed; it contained 0.045 g of aluminum corresponding to about 1% of the aluminum used in the distillation. It follows from this that only a very small part of the lighter alkyl aluminum compounds distills over. As can be seen, decomposition takes place during the distillation, which is why conventional distillation cannot be used to separate the alkylaluminum growth product.
PATENT CLAIMS:
1. Process for the distillative separation of trialkylaluminum growth products, which were produced from alkylaluminum compounds and low molecular weight α-olefins, have a statistical alkyl chain length distribution characterized by Poisson's equation and contain 2 - 30 carbon atoms per alkyl radical, in at least two fractions with non-statistical Alkyl group distribution, characterized in that the trialkylaluminum growth product is produced by continuous distillation under a pressure between about 0.001 and 5 Torr at a temperature between about 0 and 200 ° C. and an average residence time of the trialkylaluminum compounds in the distillation zone between about 0.001 and 2 sec is dismantled.
