<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
bindenden Kunststoffteile selbst aufweist.

Method of joining bodies made of thermoplastic
Plastic by welding
The invention relates to a method for connecting bodies made of thermoplastic material, for example those made of polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, polypropylene, polymethyl acrylate, polystyrene, etc. and their copolymers by welding using hot gas with the supply of an additional wire made of the same plastic as the body to be connected consists.
It is known to connect bodies made of thermoplastic material to one another by means of hot gas welding using a welding wire. According to this process, gas heated to welding temperature is blown between the joints of the plastic parts to be connected and at the same time against the additional wire, which is also used for welding. The plastic parts to be connected and the additional wire become plastic, so that the parts to be connected can be welded.
Commercially available welding wires, which have a circular, sometimes polygonal cross-section, are used as additional wire for this known method. Such welding or additional wires have previously been produced in particular by extrusion, independently of the plate or profile pieces to be welded.
It is therefore in the rarest of cases that the material of these additional wires has the same chemical and physical properties as the base material of the plastic parts to be welded. As a result, additional wires are often used for welding plastic parts that do not meet the respective requirements, especially since some thermoplastics can only be flawlessly welded if the additional wire, apart from the shape, has practically the same properties as the plate or plate to be welded. Profile material possesses.
The invention is based on the object of producing a welded connection which is independent of the delivery or the selection of a suitable filler wire and wherein the filler wire used has the same physical and chemical properties as the base material itself.
According to the invention, this is achieved in that a strip is cut off from the bodies to be connected immediately before they are welded, which strip is brought into wire form and then fed as an additional wire during the welding.
The strip serving as an additional wire can thus either be separated from the plastic parts to be welded immediately before the parts to be connected are welded together in such a way that it can be used directly as an additional wire for the subsequent welding process without further deformation, or it is the cut-off strip is only brought into the wire shape suitable for the additional wire by machining.
With the method according to the invention, a flawless weld seam can be achieved, which in each case has the same composition and the same properties as the base material of the

has binding plastic parts itself.
The strip can be removed in a known and simple manner by shearing, cutting off, pushing off or peeling off and can be carried out at any point on the plastic part.
The separation process can, however, also advantageously be combined with the preparation of the welding point and the material can be removed from the joint of the plastic parts to be welded.
The additional wire used for the welding process according to the invention, for example with a circular cross-section, can be used without cutting by rolling, rolling or pulling the strip in the middle! :; heated and precisely tempered tools of a known type are produced. However, it is. it is particularly advantageous to use a cutting molding, because you can do without expensive heating and control equipment.
To produce the additional wire for connecting the plastic parts according to the invention, a device such as that shown in the drawing can be used. This device consists of a base frame l ,. which has a guide piece 2 and bearing blocks 3, in which the latter a hollow shaft 4 is rotatably mounted and is rigidly connected at one end to a drive pulley 5 and at its other end to a cutter head 6 on which radially adjustable cutters 7 are attached.
The strip separated from the plastic parts to be welded, for example a rectangular cross section, is pushed through the guide piece 2, the recess cross section of which corresponds to that of the strip. The shaft 4 is brought to 500-6000, preferably 750-1250 rev / min by means of the drive pulley 5. The face plate 6 with the knives 7 runs with it.
The strip running in via the guide piece 2 is turned to the desired thickness by the knives 7 and, in the finished state, runs through the bore of the hollow shaft 4. Instead of the device shown for producing the welding wire, however, other suitable devices or machines can also be used. For example, instead of the stationary rotating device described, a portable device can also be used which is similar to a hand drill with a hollow shaft and which has a knife carrier instead of a drill chuck.
