Process for the production of aromatic carboxylic acids
The invention relates to the production of aromatic carboxylic acids. In particular, it relates to a process for the oxidation of a methyl substituted aromatic compound to the corresponding one
Carboxylic acid or the corresponding carboxylic acids.
It has been proposed to oxidize aromatic compounds, particularly alkyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbons, to produce aromatic carboxylic acids. The alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons having two or more carbon atoms in the alkyl group were relatively easily oxidized. The oxidation of methyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbons, on the other hand, was relatively difficult. Even with catalysts, temperatures in the order of magnitude of 150 to 2250 ° C. and above were required, for example, to oxidize xylene to toluic acid. To maintain the liquid phase, it was necessary to use superatmospheric pressure.
It has now been found that methyl-substituted aromatic compounds (methyl aromatics) in the liquid phase at atmospheric pressure in the presence of heavy metal-organic chelates, such as. B.
Heavy metal phthalocyanines or azaporphines, can be oxidized, so that the oxidation begins immediately when the oxygen is introduced into the reaction system, and that the catalyst and / or the heavy metal thereof can easily be removed from the acid formed.
The invention relates to a process for the production of aromatic carboxylic acids by oxidation of one or more methyl groups in corresponding methyl aromatics, which in addition to at least one methyl group can also contain a carboxyl group, by means of oxygen or oxygen-containing gases at elevated temperature in the liquid phase in the presence of accelerators, which also can be oxidized, from the series of alkyl aromatics with at least one alkyl group bonded directly to the aromatic nucleus, in which the a-carbon atom to the aromatic nucleus has only 1 or 2 hydrogen atoms, preferably only one hydrogen atom, and in the presence of heavy metal oxidation catalysts, which is characterized that a heavy metal organic chelate is used as the heavy metal oxidation catalyst.
The process according to the invention is applicable to the oxidation of methyl-substituted aromatic hydrocarbons to the corresponding aromatic carboxylic acids at temperatures sufficiently low to enable operation in the liquid phase at atmospheric pressure. Examples of the type of oxidation under consideration here are the oxidation of toluene to benzoic acid, the oxidation of xylene to toluic acid and the oxidation of methylnaphthalene to naphthoic acid. It has also been found that methyl-substituted aromatic carboxylic acids can be oxidized directly to aromatic polycarboxylic acids without it being necessary to convert the methylaromatic carboxylic acid into esters.
For example, it is possible to oxidize p-toluic acid to terephthalic acid without first converting it into toluic acid methyl ester. Accordingly, non-limiting examples of methyl-substituted aromatic compounds which can be oxidized in the process according to the invention are: toluene, o-xylene, m-xylene, p-xylene, hemimellithol, pseudocumene, mesitylene, ss-methylnaphthalene, <x-methylnaphthalene, Dimethylnaphthalenes, o-toluic acid, m-toluic acid, p-toluic acid, hemimellitic acid, the isomeric dimethylbenzoic acids, in particular mesitylenic acid, methylpyridine, p-chlorotoluene, toluene nitrile.
It is a feature of the invention that the methyl aromatic compounds listed above, which are difficult to oxidize at atmospheric pressure, are easily oxidized when a loading
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
is used more quickly. The accelerators under consideration here are alkyl aromatic hydrocarbons in which at least one alkyl group has a secondary carbon atom bonded directly to the aromatic nucleus. Alkylbenzenes in which the a-carbon atom to the benzene nucleus has two hydrogen atoms are also suitable. Compounds with only one alkyl group in which the a-carbon atom has only one hydrogen atom have the structure

Carboxylic acid products are released.
In many cases, however, the aromatic carboxylic acid product crystallizes out of the reaction mixture when it is cooled. In this case, the product can be separated off by filtration without the need for neutralization. In other cases the product can be separated by distillation techniques, usually under reduced pressure.
The following specific working examples serve to illustrate the operation of the method according to the invention and its superiority. The invention is not to the reactants and conditions used in the examples, or to the operations or procedures listed
Tampering limited. Other reactants and conditions set forth above can be used in practicing the invention.
Example 1: Oxidation of xylene.
In a reaction vessel equipped with a reflux condenser and water trap, 50 g of p-xylene,
50 g cumene (accelerator) and 0.5 g iron phthalocyanine (catalyst) introduced. This reaction mixture was kept at about 1350C by external heating of the reaction vessel with refluxed xylene. Oxygen was bubbled through the heated reaction mixture at a rate of 0.0085 to 0.0113 m3 / h for 2 hours. The reaction mixture was then cooled in an ice bath and crystals separated out. These were separated by filtration and gave a crude product of 17 g.
This product was recrystallized from an alcohol-water mixture, giving pure, white crystals which melted at 176-1790C (p-toluic acid melts at 1790C). When the white crystalline product is mixed with a known p-toluic acid (mixed melting point) the melting point (179 ° C.) of the known p-toluic acid does not decrease.
The white crystalline product was further identified as p-toluic acid by treating 0.2 g with 5 ml of thionyl chloride for 15 minutes under reflux and then pouring the mixture into cold concentrated ammonium hydroxide. The precipitated amide was dried and had a melting point of 160-163 ° C. (p-toluamide melts at 1650 ° C.).
The oil recovered after filtration of the crude acid product was analyzed by vapor phase chromatography and found to contain 50.8% cumene and p-xylene and 25% acetophenone. The remaining material contained dicumyl and small amounts of products with higher molecular weight. Unreacted cumene and p-xylene can be recycled back to the process. The approach is shown in Table 1.
Example 2: A similar approach to that of Example 1 was carried out, with the exception that no cumene was used. The feed consisted of 75 grams p-xylene and 0.375 grams iron phthalocyanine. Oxygen was bubbled through the feed at 1350C at a rate of 0.0085 m3 / h for 5 hours. There was no measurable yield of oxidation product. The approach is shown in Table 1.
Example 3: Using the reaction system described in Example 1, a charge of 60 g of o-xylene, 60 g of cumene, and 0.6 g of iron phthalocyanine was heated to 1350 ° C. Oxygen was bubbled through the feed at a rate of 0.0085 to 0.011 mS / hr for 3 hours. The "pro-

The purified crystals melted at 102-1030C (melting point of o-toluic acid = 103.4C). With a mixed melting point of the product of this example and known o-toluic acid, there was no decrease in the melting point.
The product was further characterized as o-toluic acid by treating 0.5 g with 5 ml of thionyl chloride under reflux for 30 min. The reaction mixture was carefully poured into cold, concentrated ammonium hydroxide and the precipitated amide was separated off and recrystallized from water. The dried amide melted at 145-146 ° C. The melting point for o-toluamide is 1470 ° C.
The oil remaining after the caustic extraction weighed 84 g. It was examined by vapor phase chromatography and shows a content of 76, lao cumene and o-xylene, 19, olo acetophenone and small amounts of dimeric products. The approach is shown in Table 1.
