Process and plant for the decarburization-free heat treatment of steels with mill skin
One possibility for the decarburization-free heat treatment of steels with rolled skin is the oxidative annealing method. In this process, considerable material losses occur, and there is also the uncertainty that the decarburization speed is greater than the scaling speed and therefore failures cannot be avoided after this annealing method. Before further processing of the material, pickling or descaling is absolutely necessary, the removal of scale often encountering considerable difficulties and long pickling times being required. In order to overcome these difficulties, annealing under protective gas has increasingly been used in recent years.
Annealing steel with a rolled skin under protective gas does not lead with certainty to the desired results. When using partially burned luminous gas as protective gas, unpleasant reactions occur between the O2 of the rolling skin and the protective gas, which are difficult to control. These phenomena occur even if the protective gas has undergone processing and is therefore carburizing.
In many cases the material is therefore pickled before the annealing process. However, this method requires the presence of a pickling plant. In addition, the protective gas must have a neutral character.

The steel treated according to this process with rolled skin or an oxide skin resulting from other hot forming is not only characterized by the non-decarburized edge zone but also by a reduced scale skin which, especially during drawing, does not require pickling and has a beneficial effect on the drawing process. The required protective gas can be produced relatively cheaply in a normal exothermic protective gas generator. The construction and operation of the system are extremely simple and the gas consumption is very low.
The procedure can be applied to all protective gases with CO components.
The drawing shows the principle of a system for carrying out the process.
The system can be operated with one or more annealing pots, which can be interconnected in any alternation and variable number.

The luminous gas partially burned in an exothermic protective gas generator 1 is fed to a protective gas gasometer 2 and is therefore available at a constant pressure. Before the start of annealing, the annealing pots or the annealing pots 3 and the entire pipe system are vented by opening the slide 6, 7 and 8 and the vent valve 12 and closing the slide 9. The protective gas is passed through the contact furnace 4, whereby the CO still contained in the protective gas. is reduced to CO. The contact furnace works at a temperature of 10000 OC, which means that the H20 contained in the protective gas is split at the same time. An analyzer connected to the plug valve 11 shows the O2 content in the annealing pot.
After reaching the required 0 content, the system is operated in a circuit. To this end, the slide 9 is opened, the vent valve 12 is closed and the fan 5 is switched on.
With the aid of the slide 7, the required specific gas throughput can be regulated. Slide 6 remains open during the entire glow period so that no negative pressure can arise in the circulatory system due to leaks and volume changes. Additional gas analyzers can be connected to the plug valves 11 to check the composition of the protective gas.
The slide 10 are used to shut off the individual annealing pots.
