Process for the remuneration of polymerization products of olefins produced by the low pressure process
The subject of the parent patent no. 205226 is a method for remuneration of after
Polymerization products of olefins, preferably ethylene and propylene, produced by low pressure processes, which are characterized in that these polymers are treated with sulfur, advantageously in a finely divided colloidal state, or with substances from which sulfur can be released or split off.
It has already been proposed to use low molecular weight olefins with the aid of organoaluminum compounds, which may contain halogen, and compounds of the heavy metals of subgroups IV to VIII of the periodic table, e.g. B. titanium tetrachloride to polymerize at low temperatures and pressures. Such processes are referred to as low-pressure polymerization processes and the polymers obtained as low-pressure polyolefins. Such methods are e.g. B. in the Belgian patents No. 533362, 534792,534888 and are referred to as the Ziegler process (see. Also Raff-Allison "Polyethylene", 1956, page 72 ff).
The above-mentioned process largely stabilizes the polymerization products of ethylene and propylene mentioned and substantially reduces or virtually eliminates the risk of the material becoming brittle during prolonged storage, in particular when exposed to high temperatures.
It has now been found that low-pressure polyolefins can be remunerated by adding the mixtures of the polymers with sulfur, advantageously in a finely divided colloidal state, or with substances from which sulfur can be released or split off, between 150 and 2500C before further processing Zinc oxide is added as a hydrogen sulfide-setting agent in amounts of 0.1 to 0.1, based on the polymerization product. The amount of sulfur to be added to the polyolefin should be 0-5si, based on the polyolefin.
Optionally, other zinc compounds such. B. zinc stearate, zinc sulfide, can be added. It is also possible to use known vulcanization accelerators in the method according to the invention.
The inventive method has the effect that the unpleasant smell that adheres to products that have only been treated with sulfur in some cases is largely eliminated.
In the aftertreatment according to the invention, further known inorganic or organic compounds with a stabilizing effect can also be added to the mixtures. Such additives are, for example, colloidal silica, aluminum oxide or carbon black in amounts of 0.1 to 5%, based on the polymer. These additives improve the effectiveness of the method used according to the invention.
The preparation of the mixtures according to the invention can be carried out with the polymerization products, which are mostly in powder form, and the likewise powdery additives in a suitable drying

Quenching and tempering agents can be carried out on a rolling mill or by calendering or by means of a suitable screw injection machine, whereby good mixing of the material must be ensured. Such methods of interference are also known per se.
The preparation of a premix of the material in powder form with subsequent post-treatment of such a mixture on a rolling mill or by means of a particularly expedient procedure has proven to be
Proven extrusion at elevated temperature. By using elevated temperatures in the range of
At 150 to 250 C, the polymerization products are transformed into the plastic state, so that an optimal homogeneity of the mixture can be achieved.
In this mode of operation, there is extensive binding of the polymerization product which occurs in certain, albeit small, amounts due to the reaction of the sulfur with the polymerization product in question
Achieved hydrogen sulfide compounds. In this way, in the subsequent deformation process, after the compression, injection molding or extrusion process, an odor nuisance of the workers engaged in the execution of the work is largely eliminated
The polymerization products obtained in the procedure show no significant change in color or, taking into account the addition of z. B. zinc oxide only the inherent color of the product in question.
A coloring of the products thus obtained, in particular with suitable, known organic
Coloring is easily possible.
The moldings made from such tempered polymerisation products have excellent aging resistance, which exceeds that of moldings made from non-aftertreated polymerisation products many times over.
Example 1: A homogeneous premix made of 1500 g of polyethylene in powder form produced in a suitable known mixer, which is produced using the so-called low-pressure process (Ziegler-
Method) has been obtained, with 1.5 g colloid sulfur (0.100) and 7.5 g zinc oxide (0.5%) is well plasticized and mixed on a rolling mill at 1700C rolling temperature (test 3, see table next below).
The total rolling time is 2 hours. After 10 minutes, 60 minutes and after 120 minutes
Samples of the rolling duration are taken, which are determined for the degree of degradation by determining the specific
Value and the aging value by determining the so-called Brittle value. At the same time, the same mixture to which 0.1% mercaptobenzothiazole, which acts as an activating additive in the tempering process, was also added, is treated under the same test conditions (test 4). In addition to these two mixtures, there was a comparative sample
Polyethylene, which only contains 0.1% sulfur (experiment 2) and a sample of polyethylene without any
Addition (experiment 1) for comparison with the first experiments (3/4) on processing.
The result of the tests is shown in the table below.
