Pesticides
A large number of sulfur-containing compounds have already been proposed for pest control, e.g. B. salts or esters of alkyldithiocarbamates for sterilizing culture soils, tetrasubstituted thiuram sulfide, polyethylene thiuram disulfide as a fungicide and. a.
Dimethylthiuram monosulfide has now been found as a new agent that has shown excellent results in combating pests, in particular in combating nematodes.
This compound has not yet been described, but it was mentioned that the disubstituted thiuram monosulfides are unstable and were immediately disintegrated again when they were produced. According to the method described below, it is possible to produce the dimethylthiuram monosulfide, u. between N-methyldithiocarbamate and phosgene at temperatures below 45 c.
The representation is based on the equation
EMI1.1
by reacting sodium N-methyldithiocarbamic acid with phosgene in a manner analogous to the known preparation of the tetra-substituted compounds. To carry out the reaction, an apparatus consisting of a triple-tubed 1 liter round-bottom flask equipped with a reflux condenser, stirrer, thermometer and inlet tube can be used. An absorption vessel for the COS formed (e.g. alcohol, ammonia) is placed behind the flask. 478 cms (about 574 g) of a 40.5% strength by weight solution of sodium N-methyldithiocarbamic acid (1.8 mol) are poured into the flask and 97 g of phosgene are then passed in about 75 minutes at a temperature below 45 ° C. preferably at about 30oC.
The mixture is then stirred for about 30 minutes. A solid, colorless substance precipitates out and is filtered off with suction and washed neutral with H.O. Yield about 140 g dry, m.p. = crude 66-69 C (decomp.). The product is immediately reprecipitated from ethanol / H20 or from CHCl / petroleum ether. The melting point of the purified substance is 75-77 C (decomp.). The analysis delivers the values within the error limit

Further evidence that confirms that the monosulphide is really present is the good solubility of the previously known vertically substituted monosulphides compared to the disulphides, which is also mentioned in the literature.
Dimethylthiuram monosulfide is also considerably more soluble in ethanol than the corresponding disulfide.
The product prepared by the above-mentioned process is eminently suitable for pest control, e.g. B. to combat nematodes found in the soil. It is in this case z. B. as an aqueous suspension or solution in organic solvents, such as. B. chlorinated hydrocarbons, especially methylene chloride, ethylene chloride and. a. applied.

The known more highly substituted thiuram monosulfides are far less effective than those in that
Pesticides used according to the invention compound or are those without any effect.
The solution of the N, N'-dimethylthiuram monosulfide in methylene chloride has e.g. Compared to the alkyldithiocarbamic acid salts, which can only be used in aqueous solution, for example, it also has the advantage that it is highly volatile in the soil, releases the active ingredient quickly and is well distributed. This means that only a short waiting period is required between treatment and sowing.
