<Desc/Clms Page number 2>
<Desc/Clms Page number 3>
<Desc/Clms Page number 4>

Ignition switch with electric gas discharge
The invention relates to an improvement of the ignition switches with electrical gas discharge described in Patent No. 196009, which are intended in particular for igniting electrical gas discharge devices, preferably fluorescent lamps. The parent patent relates to such switches with electrical gas discharge, which have a tightly sealed bulb with an ionizable gas filling, leads protruding into the bulb, two main electrodes and at least one auxiliary electrode, at least one of the main electrodes being designed as a bimetal electrode and being heated by means of a gas discharge or . by cooling with the other main electrode closes or interrupts an electrical contact.
The leads are each connected to one of the main electrodes in such a way that the current flowing from the main electrode to the lead either does not flow at all or only partially flows through the auxiliary electrode. The auxiliary electrode assigned to at least one main electrode and intended for heating the same is thermally and electrically directly connected to its main electrode only at one or both of its ends so that the cooling of the bimetallic main electrode is delayed by the heat developed and stored in the auxiliary electrode and gradually transferred to the main electrode the duration of the contact of the main electrodes is increased.
The auxiliary electrode is now designed in such a way that an electric arc discharge forms between it and one of the main electrodes before the main electrodes make contact, the heat of which causes the auxiliary electrode to be heated to a temperature that is higher than that, advantageously at least 600 C. highest operating temperature of any main electrode, which makes it possible to store a fairly considerable amount of heat in the low-mass auxiliary electrode.
This switch according to the parent patent perfectly complies with the condition that the fluorescent lamp or fluorescent tube is to be ignited without flickering by means of it, and it also causes the ignition to occur fairly quickly. Recently, however, increasingly higher requirements have been placed on the faster the ignition occurs and the present invention is primarily aimed at a design of the ignition switch according to the parent patent in which this requirement can also be satisfied.
According to this requirement in practice, the igniter should activate the fluorescent tube at the nominal voltage without flickering and within 7 seconds and at eir. If the supply voltage is reduced in this way, which is often unavoidable in practice and is around 10 - 150/0 lower than the nominal voltage, it will also ignite within 7 seconds. One tries to reduce this time, but difficulties arise. If you use such an ignition switch that the tube z. B. zain within 3 seconds, a flickering of the tube on the occasion of the ignition is almost inevitable, and there is also harmful overstressing of the cathodes of the fluorescent tube.
Attempts have therefore been made to solve this problem by means of two igniters connected in series, one of which was a glow discharge device, the other a thermal device. In this way, the above disadvantages could be avoided, but the necessity of using two devices causes considerable additional costs and is also associated with some other disadvantages.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
The purpose of the present invention is now to design the ignition switch according to the parent patent in such a way that by means of it the fluorescent tube not only always within the above-mentioned 7 seconds. but can even be ignited significantly faster without any disadvantages when igniting at nominal voltage, e. B. flickering, overstressing of the cathodes etc. would occur.
As can already be seen from the above brief description of the ignition switch according to the parent patent, this ignition switch works in such a way that when it is switched on, the ignition switch being switched into the circuit in the usual manner in such ignition switches, a gas discharge occurs in the circuit
Switch uses. This gas discharge takes place on the one hand between the counter electrode and the main electrode. and between the counter electrode and the auxiliary electrode associated with the main electrode on the other hand, u. as a glow discharge, but the on. the auxiliary electrode turns into an arc discharge.
The heat developed in this way at the auxiliary electrode is mainly radiated through to the bimetallic main electrode to be heated, but also transferred by direct heat conduction and consequently the bimetallic electrode is heated very quickly by these amounts of heat, along with the heat generated by the gas discharge itself. As a result, the main electrode bends and touches the counter electrode, whereby the heating circuit is closed and therefore the electrodes of the fluorescent lamp are preheated. This state lasts until the H2. The upper electrode cools and separates from the counter electrode. This cooling of the main electrode is delayed by the heat transferred to the main electrode from the auxiliary electrode even after the contact has been made.
The voltage surge that occurs when the main electrodes are separated from each other ignites the fluorescent lamp, which has already properly preheated electrodes. As has already been said in the description of the parent patent, by appropriately dimensioning the auxiliary electrode, you can ensure that the main electrodes touch each other long enough to ensure that the electrodes of the fluorescent tube are adequately preheated during this time and consequently reliable ignition without flickering is achieved .
If you want to shorten the ignition time of the switch, it is not advisable, for the reasons mentioned above, to shorten the contact time of the main electrodes, since then the electrodes of the fluorescent tube cannot be sufficiently preheated. Accordingly, it is necessary to shorten the time that elapses from the moment the ignition switch is turned on until the contact closure of the main electrode. In doing so, however, it must be taken into account that one still has to store such an amount of heat aT1Í in the auxiliary electrode during this shortened time, which ensures a sufficiently long contact time of the ignition switch after contact closure, and therefore the task to be solved is not easy.
According to our investigations in this regard, we have now found that, according to the invention, the above object can be achieved by changing not only the dimensions and, if necessary, the arrangement of the auxiliary electrode, but also those of the main electrode assigned to it in such a way that they correspond to each other be matched. For this purpose, one must first ensure that the auxiliary electrode can transfer the amount of heat developed and stored in it to the main electrode assigned to it as quickly as possible and with little loss, and secondly that the heat capacities of the auxiliary electrode and the main electrode assigned to it are in a corresponding ratio to each other stand.
In addition, it is advisable to use a main electrode with a large specific curvature, which therefore only requires a fairly small amount of heating in order to touch the other main electrode. If this main electrode has a low heat capacity, it can be heated up very quickly to the temperature at which it contacts the other main electrode.
Our investigations have now shown that the heat transfer from the auxiliary electrode to the main electrode in the ignition switch according to the parent patent takes place primarily by radiation before the contact closure of the main electrodes, especially when the auxiliary electrode of the main electrode assigned to it is spatially parallel, as is also shown in the drawing Master patent illustrated. In order to achieve the fastest and most low-loss heat transfer possible, the bimetal electrode is arranged according to the invention in such a way that the de. Electrodes are located at a shorter distance, no more than 2.5 mm, from the main electrode to be heated by them.
Moreover. these electrodes are dimensioned in such a way that the mass of the main electrode is by no means more than fifty times the auxiliary electrode, i.e. the mass ratio of these electrodes has a value between 1 and 5U, suitably between 2.5 and 25, so that the ratio of their heat capacities, considering their different specific warmth, one
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
has a value between 3 and 150, expediently a maximum of 75. In this case, the main electrode expediently consists of such a bimetal strip, the specific bending of which, based on a strip 100 mm long and 1 mm thick, is at least 0.140 mm per degree Celsius.
The bimetallic electrode is expediently made as thin as possible, advantageously at most 0.2 mm thick and narrow, that is at most 4 mm wide, so that its mass is as low as possible and thus a favorable mass ratio is created. This is because it is advantageous to also choose the mass of the auxiliary electrode to be low, so that it can be heated to the required high temperature very quickly by the given rather low amount of energy. For this purpose, the auxiliary electrode advantageously consists of a singly coiled tungsten wire, the wire thickness of which is at most 0.2 mm, the internal diameter of the coil advantageously being between 0.18 and 1.8 mm.
In the case of a helix made of a tungsten wire with a diameter between 0.08 and 0.2 mm and an inside diameter between 0.18 and 1.8 mm, it has proven to be useful to have a pitch factor "s" of
EMI3.1
diameter and pitch factor.
In such ignition switches, in which the auxiliary electrode between the legs of the U-shaped
Main electrode lying parallel to it, the bimetal strip forming the main electrode can be very narrow, i.e. at most 4, advantageously only 2-3 mm wide, with a maximum thickness of 0.2 mm, and this embodiment is good Heat transfer through radiation is particularly favorable.
After the contact has closed, the arc between the main and auxiliary electrodes is extinguished, and the auxiliary electrode therefore cools down and, at lower temperatures, can only transfer greatly reduced amounts of heat through radiation to the main electrode. In order to be able to make good use of the amount of heat stored in the auxiliary electrode to keep the main electrode warm, it is advisable to weld the auxiliary electrode with a large, at least equal, cross-sectional area at at least one of its ends to the main electrode. The total length of the bimetal main electrode can be between about 5 u. td 25 mm.
By following the above rules, which result in very unusual dimensional relationships, a flawlessly working, very quickly and reliably igniting switch is created, which ignites the tubes, despite its fast action, only when the electrodes are properly preheated and therefore gently and without flicker. By using small masses in addition to large specific bending, the time from switching on to contact closure is significantly shortened and unsafe contact closure is avoided, while a corresponding mass ratio ensures long enough contact closure and thus proper preheating of the electrodes of the fluorescent lamp.
In an ignition switch executed according to the present invention, the structure of which corresponded to FIG. 2 of the drawing of the parent patent, z. B. the following dimensions and proportions have proven to be useful:
The bimetal strip that forms the U-shaped main electrode is 0.1 mm thick, 3 mm wide and 20 mm long, with a specific deflection of about 0.150 mm per degree Celsius. The single coiled auxiliary electrode consists of a tungsten wire with a diameter of 0.1 mm and has 14 threads. With an inner diameter of the helix of 0.6 mm, the total length of the wire is 30.7 mm. The distance between the auxiliary electrode and the legs of the main electrode is 1 mm.
With the above dimensions, the weight of the main electrode 49, 2 mg, and therefore its heat capacity in view of its specific heat of 0.112, the rather low value of 5.5 mg cal / degree Celsius. The weight of the auxiliary electrode is 4.6 mg, and therefore its heat capacity, considering its specific heat of 0.034, is also the very low value of 0.156 mg eal / degree Celsius. The mass ratio is therefore 10.7 and the heat capacity ratio is 35.
When using a fluorescent lamp for 220 volts mains voltage and 40 watts of power, this switch resulted in contact closure after about 0.8 seconds and maintained the contact closure for about 2 seconds, so that the total ignition time (at the nominal value of the feeding mains voltage) was about 2.8 seconds . When the mains voltage was reduced by 10%, the ignition time was about 6 seconds. Ignition was always flicker-free at a mains voltage of 220 volts and with the electrodes properly preheated. The gas filling of the ignition switch consisted of argon gas under a pressure of 20 torr.
The invention is in no way restricted to the above example, because it can be used if the
<Desc / Clms Page number 4>
According to the rules according to the invention, it can also be achieved in other embodiments that the igniter delivers a voltage surge that is reliably sufficient to ignite the tube despite its short ignition time. It can also be expedient to provide the electrodes in a manner known per se with special contacts that bring about contact closure by mutual contact. In this way it can namely be achieved that the asymmetry of the igniter is reduced and therefore the voltage surges occurring with different polarities of the mains voltage differ from one another in their maximum value by at most lolo, whereby reliable ignition is always guaranteed.
Of course, other gas fillings and other pressures can also be used, but it can always be achieved that the voltage surge occurring during the first contact separation is large enough to gently ignite the fluorescent lamp, which has been properly preheated during the previous contact period.
