Österreichische PATENTSCHRIFT Nr. 17373. THE WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE COMPANY LIMITED IN LONDON.

Austrian Patent No. 17373. THE WESTINGHOUSE BRAKE COMPANY LIMITED IN LONDON.
Automatic valve control for the gradual release of air pressure brakes.
The present invention relates to air brakes for railroad cars and similar vehicles and consists in particular in a device by means of which
EMI1.1
the air emerging from the bromine cylinder is opened and closed, this latter pressure being influenced accordingly by a resistance. In the valve arrangements of this type implemented so far, this resistance is generated by compressed air,
EMI1.2
container acts on a diaphragm or piston to which the outlet valve of the device is attached.
However, such an arrangement has the disadvantage that the device is light

becomes. Such an overpressure in the reservoir, which releases the compressed air for the resistance, can be so great that opening of the valve can be prevented at normal pressure in the main line. With such designs it is also impossible to always achieve a reliable release of the brakes if the effective pressure in the main pipe falls below the normal level, because under such circumstances the pressure in the main pipe and the pressure of the air flowing out of the brake cylinder
EMI1.4
The present invention consists in a device in which the pressure level in the container containing the compressed air as a resistance can be changed and at any time a predominance of this pressure over the pressure in the main pipe by more a! s avoided a certain amount. With the subject matter of the present invention, therefore, a safe release of the brakes can always be achieved.

Buried in the Bremnylioder before the higher pressure prevailing in the reservoir closes the valve 23 again.
The valves 33 and 84 in the channels 82 and M, through which the two chambers 1 and 2 communicate with one another, are arranged in such a way that every pressure increase in the chamber 11 is communicated to the chamber 1 with the lifting of the valve 98, whereas For the lifting of the valve 34 there must be a greater overpressure in the chamber 1. The activity of these two valves can also be performed by one
EMI3.1
special overpressure, but opens towards chamber 2 only when a greater overpressure prevails.
Another embodiment of the valve control is shown in FIG. The spring 29, which is used to open the valve 23 in the device shown in FIG. 1, is replaced by a small chamber 40 which communicates with the outside air through an opening 41 and is separated from the chamber 1 by a membrane 42 is. This membrane, which is connected to the disk 6 by the disks 43, 44 and rod 45 and to the disk 9 by rod 10, has the same area as the membrane 5; As a result, the pressure exerted on the membrane 5 in chamber 2 is equalized by the air pressure in chamber 1 on the membrane 42
EMI3.2
Fig. 1 is different, is not connected to the disk, but is in contact with it by the pressure of a small spring 47.
The chamber J in FIG. 2 is smaller than in FIG. 1 and communicates through an opening 48 with a suitable reservoir. This modification does not bring about any change in the mode of operation of the device compared to that according to FIG.
In Fig. 3, a further embodiment of the device is shown; the same is also not significantly different from those shown in FIGS. 1 and 2. In this exemplary embodiment, the air escaping from the brake cylinder in chamber 3 goes to a central channel 50 through valve 46, which is shown here in the closed state, into chamber 40 and from here through opening 19 to the outside. The valve 46 is opened when the membranes and disks have been moved (to the left in the drawing) because the valve, which is designed with a rib extension, strikes against an adjustable stop 51.
Since, while the brakes are released, the auxiliary reservoirs of the whole train are in communication with the main pipe, because the three-way valve is in the open position, the pressure in the auxiliary reservoirs must change in the same way as in the main pipe. The chamber 2 of the device can therefore also be connected to the auxiliary reservoir instead of the main pipe, without changing the mode of operation of the device. By slightly increasing the air pressure in the main pipe, the pressure in the brake cylinder can be reduced accordingly and the brakes can be released gradually.
When using ordinary three-way valves, which are used in air pressure brakes, the pressure in the main line is immediately increased in order to release the brakes, the parts being moved into the position in which the auxiliary reservoir of the main pipe through the three-way valve is fed with compressed air. In the case of air brakes equipped with the apparatus described above, the auxiliary reservoir is therefore refilled with compressed air from the main pipe through the three-way valve as soon as the brakes are gradually released. When using the device described above, it is not necessary to make a modification to the nbtichon braking devices in order to make the release in a gradual manner.
It is only necessary that the connecting lines leading from the main pipe and the outlet opening of the three-way valve to the device described are present in order to achieve this result. Also the full one
The brakes can be released as required.
