  Voltage dependent resistance
In the construction of surge arresters, it is known that resistors are usually used, which consist of a material whose resistance value decreases with increasing voltage. It is desirable that such resistors let through very large currents for a short time and have the greatest possible discharge capacity with the smallest possible space requirement. The aim is therefore to make the current density uniform over all cross sections of the resistor body in order to avoid local overheating on the one hand and to achieve the best possible use of space on the other. As a rule, such resistors are produced in the shape of a cylinder or disk, the flat end faces serving as contact surfaces for the power supply and being usually metallized for this purpose.

For manufacturing reasons, it is difficult to metalize these end faces up to the very edge, which means that the actual, highly conductive power supply surface is smaller than the adjacent cross-section of the resistor, which leads to an increase in the current density at the edge zone, which leads to breakdowns Cause.

The present invention has the purpose of avoiding this disadvantage by having the highly conductive current transfer surfaces on the two end faces at such a distance from the edge and with such a radius in the case of voltage-dependent resistors
