Process for making chemically reactive gases or vapors in air or other inert gases recognizable.

For the detection of gases or vapors in air or other inert gases, it is already known to let the gases to be detected act on reaction solutions that have previously been absorbed by porous materials such as cotton or glass wool. These absorbent masses had to be housed in a tube or vessel made of transparent material or in a sleeve made of a suitable mesh screen in order to hold the absorbent masses together and to make the reaction visible at all. These gas detection methods are therefore relatively expensive and difficult to carry out.

According to the method according to the patent, the detection of gases is simplified in that the glass wool or the like which absorbs the reaction solution is used in the form of pressed plates without any cover. As a result, the containers for the porous masses are no longer necessary, since the glass wool in the pressed plates holds together and the glass wool can be stacked much more evenly during the manufacture of plates than when it is placed in pipes or sieve containers, so that the in Taking into account extremely small amounts of gases to be detected, a higher uniformity and thus accuracy and sensitivity of the detection is achieved. The absorbent body consists only of absorbent material here, since a container for this is not required.

For the detection of gases or vapors, the reaction solution, z. B. a permanganate solution, applied to a plate pressed from glass wool or similar colorless indifferent material and introduced into the air to be examined. The pink permanganate solution will discolour or take on a dirty brown color. The type of gas retained can be inferred from the color that occurs.

Instead of a permanganate solution, a solution of a chromate or bichromate can also be used.
