have to. These therefore remain intact as individual coarse grains of sand in the lower part of the softening room even after they have settled down, can be withdrawn from the work space at any time - with simultaneous replacement by fresh fine sand - and because of their uniform coarse grain size, low water content, and the resulting effortless drying ability can be conveniently conveyed away and advantageously used for various industrial purposes.

The relatively high flow velocity causes a considerable increase in performance with reduced dimensions of the system and eliminates the hitherto practically unavoidable temporary cleaning of the contact material filling by backwashing and the like. like

Although in the method according to the invention those contact substances have proven to be the best which, according to their chemical composition, are related to the substances to be eliminated, i.e. to the hardness formers during softening, especially fine marble sand and the like. Like., Satisfactory results can also be obtained when using fine quartz sand and the like. Ä. Achieve fine-grained contact materials unrelated to the hardness builders. If the grain size of the contact material, the flow rate and the size of the softening space are correctly adjusted, the water leaves this free of all hardness components, so that any subsequent treatment is then superfluous.

With subsequent filtration, the residence time of the liquid in the softening chamber or its size can be additionally reduced or the flow rate and thus the performance of the system can be increased while maintaining the other advantages.

The process is equally suitable for treating water for any industrial purpose, namely for steam boiler feed, as well as drinking water and can also be applied analogously to the clarification of water, for example using aluminum sulphate with or without softening at the same time.

PATENT CLAIM: Process for uninterrupted clarification or softening of water with precipitation of the substances contained therein or by means of added chemicals see precipitating substances and / or precipitated hardness builders on water-insoluble contact material parts that are kept in motion by the upwardly flowing water and are taken out of work in partial quantities, characterized that the contact substances in the form of fine sand are introduced into the operation at the beginning of the operation and are removed from the operation as sand that has become coarse-grained due to the precipitated substances and is replaced by fresh fine sand.
