<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Hand-operated welding tongs for electrical resistance welding.
The known devices available for carrying out resistance welding are extremely extensive, heavy and bulky and allow welding to be carried out essentially in only one direction. It is therefore not possible in many cases, especially with workpieces of larger dimensions, to carry out the resistance welding with these devices, because the workpiece or the welding point cannot be touched to the welding device, i.e. H. comes to the welding electrodes of the same.
It has therefore already been proposed to design the welding device as welding tongs, the electrodes of which are connected to the forming device (the welding transformer) by means of flexible cables. However, these forceps-shaped devices have the disadvantage that they do not allow the fulfillment of the conditions mentioned below, which are fundamental for achieving good visual welding, to be achieved. Namely, these conditions are:
The welding process may only begin at the moment when the electrodes are pressed against the workpiece with a predetermined pressure (welding pressure). Next, the device should switch off automatically, u. between a moment in which a certain quality or a certain state of the weld is reached.
A measure of this is given by the magnitude of the welding current passing through the electrodes, i. H. the device must remain in operation until the welding current level, which characterizes the completion of the welding, is reached.
The previously known stationary welding devices (welding machines) meet these conditions in that, on the one hand, the welding current is switched on as a function of a spring that determines the contact pressure with adjustable bias and, on the other hand, the welding current influences a maximum current relay, which then interrupts the welding circuit, when the welding current has reached the level that characterizes the completion of the weld.
The invention now creates a hand-operated welding gun which, taking into account the aforementioned conditions, u. between completely automatic, d. H. a good weld is always guaranteed without special attention from the operator of the device. This is achieved in that, according to the invention, the means known from the stationary welding devices (welding machines) for fulfilling the welding conditions are transferred to the welding tongs.
The main thing in the invention is that a spring, known per se and automatically regulating the contact pressure of the welding electrodes (welding pressure) with adjustable bias, is provided on the welding tongs, which is caused by the pressure exerted on the handles of the tongs after the electrodes have been placed the weld metal is clamped until the star contacts of the primary circuit, which are actuated by the pliers, close at the same time as the desired contact pressure is reached, d. H.
Bring the welding current to flow, which can be interrupted with a time delay by a maximum current relay influenced by the welding circuit when a certain maximum value of the welding current, which characterizes the completion of the welding, is reached.
The installation of the regulating spring and the self-actuated contact device, controlled as a function of the tension of this spring, requires special designs of the welding tongs, one of which forms an essential feature of the invention.
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
According to a further characteristic of the invention, namely the welding tongs, in which each frame leg consists of the electrode carrier and the handle arranged on the other side of the hinge joint, is designed in such a way that, in the case of one tong arm, the electrode carrier extended beyond the hinge joint and the handle two independently of one another about that
Hinge joints form pivotable parts between which the spring for regulating the welding pressure is clamped.
The drawing illustrates this embodiment of the subject invention, u. Between FIG. 1 shows a front view, FIG. 2 shows a side view of the welding tongs, FIG. 3 shows a schematic representation of the entire welding system, and FIG. 4 shows a detail.
According to FIGS. 1 and 2, the electric welding tongs consist of the short legs 1 and 2, to which the electrodes 3 and 4, which are made for example of copper, are fastened in an insulated manner on intermediate bearings 5. Both legs are hinged together, u. zw. In such a way that the short leg 2 with the long leg 6 consists of one piece, which for the eye of the short pressure leg 7, which consists of one piece with the electrode carrier 1 and for the eye of the articulated long leg 8 is a cutout has so that all three parts are articulated with a bolt 10.
A compression spring 12 is interposed between the free end of the short leg 7 and a nut 14, which is screwed onto the bolt M. The bolt 13 is screwed into the wrist 8. By adjusting the nut 14, the compression spring 12 can be set to a specific welding pressure. The ends of the pressure spring do not rest directly on the short pressure leg 7 and the nut 14, but between the pressure spring 12 on the one hand and the pressure leg 7 and nut 14 on the other hand, the plates 15 and 16 are sandwiched, on which the control contacts 17 and 18 the primary circuit of the transformer are attached, which are closed by a certain amount when the compression spring is compressed.
As a result, the electrodes 3 and 4 only receive current when they are pressed onto one another with a certain mechanical pressure. A flawless weld can thus be carried out. The pressure with which the electrodes. 3 and 4 are to be pressed together, can be adjusted by the nut 14.
Between the wrists 6 and 8, an expanding spring is attached to facilitate handling of the pliers. The long legs 6 and 8 can be covered with insulating material; as a rule, this will not be necessary since the voltage prevailing in them will not exceed 12 volts.
The device described ensures that the welding current is only switched on when the electrodes lie on top of one another with a certain mechanical pressure. However, the current should now also be switched off at a moment when a certain quality of the weld has been achieved. This state is reached when the current intensity in the primary and secondary conductors, which increases during the welding process, has reached a certain maximum value. The current is therefore switched off when the welding current has reached this value and for this purpose a maximum current relay is installed at any point, for example in the secondary line 21 (FIG. 3).
When the welding process is finished, the current in the secondary circuit of the welding transformer has increased to such an extent that the magnetic effect of the current can overcome the weight of the contact arm and attract it. The tightening takes place with a time delay due to the weight load on the contact arm, which reliably prevents the welding current from being switched off too early.
By tightening the contact arm, a contact spring 271 is actuated by means of a pin made of insulating compound, which touches a second contact and thereby closes the circuit via contacts 27 and 28 to relay 22 and back via transformer 33 and the contacts on pliers 17 and 18 . Through this the E; Ontaktarm 321 of the relay 22 attracted and the contact between 29 and 30 interrupted and thus also the pull coil of the contactor 34 currentless, whereby the contact arm 311 can return to its original position by spring tension.
At the same time, this opens the contact at 31, which previously kept the main circuit closed, and as a result the transformer 23 and thus also the electrodes 3 and 4 of the welding tongs are de-energized and the welding is ended.
However, the contacts 27 and 28 are only in contact for a very short time and since the contact arm 24 falls back to its original position immediately after the welding current is switched off, the relay 22 would also be de-energized and the contact at 29 and 30 would be closed again, whereby the Contacts 31 would be closed again by tightening the arm 31I and the welding could begin again. To prevent this, however, an auxiliary contact 32 is provided, which immediately after the interruption of the contacts 29 and 30 continues to keep the pull coil of the relay 22 energized until the pincer contacts 17 and 18 are also opened by opening with the hand and the device is thus ready is to make a new weld.
For greater operational safety, the entire control drive 17, 18 and 29, 30 and 32 and the pulling coils of the relays 22 and 34 are not operated with high voltage, but with low current,
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
u. zw. By interposing a small transformer 33, which supplies the operating voltage, e.g. B. to 12 volts, lowered. Only contact 31 has an operating voltage of 220 volts flowing through it.
In the secondary line 25 and 26, the voltage for the resistance welding is only 2-8 volts, so that all of the pliers parts can be touched safely without having to fear electric shocks.
The easily movable and flexible power supply cables 2a and 26 from the transformer 2.3 to the welding tongs can also be water-cooled by covering their entire length with a rubber hose 35, whereby a water flow is guided in a suitable manner between the cable and the rubber hose wall (Fig . 4).
It should also be noted that the transformer and the electrical switchgear are installed in a container that can be easily moved from one workstation to another on castors or in a floating or hanging arrangement and especially thanks to the easily flexible and freely movable cables 25 and 26 the welding tongs are guaranteed advantageous freedom of movement even when welding very bulky objects.
The control contacts 17, 18 of the primary circuit must be designed or arranged in such a way that their contact surfaces are not subjected to excessive mechanical stress when the pliers are operated
EMI3.1
The pressure exerted on the handles after the electrodes have been placed on the weld metal is stretched until the control contacts of the primary circuit, which are self-actuated by the pliers, close while the desired contact pressure is simultaneously achieved, d.
According to. Bring the welding current to flow, which can be interrupted in a known manner by a maximum current relay influenced by the welding circuit with a time delay when a certain maximum value of the welding current which is characteristic for the completion of the welding is reached.
