EMI1.1

EMI1.1
The purpose of the device described is to improve the control of mechanical grates in boilers, especially for central heating purposes.
There are known regulators, which regulate the grate feed or the grate speed according to the temperature of the burning fuel layer, u. so that no unburned fuel gets into the ash container. This is done in such a way that at the end of the grate, either in the slag scraper or in a specially designed hollow body attached above the fuel layer, which is optionally ribbed, a certain medium (water or air) flows, which is heated more or less by the fuel layer and this Transferring the temperature change to the control of the grate feed by means of a thermostat.
With such regulators, in which the amount of the medium flowing through is not changed, the case may arise that the regulating flap for the combustion air supply is partially or completely closed due to a smaller load. However, this has the consequence that the fuel on the grate stops burning due to a lack of air, its temperature, which is passed on to the thermostat by the transmitting medium, is greatly reduced, so that this causes the supply of new fuel instead of switching it off due to a smaller load .
This evil can easily be eliminated by the device indicated in FIGS. 1 and 2.
Here 1 means the chain grate, 2 the tensioning and drive rollers, 3 the drive motors of the grate. Under the grate is a combustion air supply chamber, which is divided into two separate chambers, u. between the large chamber 4, into which the combustion air is fed manually or automatically regulated by a regulating flap 9, and into the small chamber 5, which is located at the very end below the grate. The air is led into this small chamber through its own pipe 6, the mouth of which can be throttled manually or automatically by means of a flap 7, but in such a way that the flap 7 can never be completely closed, so that the chamber 5 always has air is fed.
Just opposite this small chamber and above the grate is the ribbed hollow body through which a heat transfer medium flows, which is more or less heated and acts on the thermostat.
This hollow body is protected from direct radiation at the top and front by the insulation 10 and is flat in shape, so that it is mainly only affected by the thermal radiation from the burned-out layer, that is, that fuel layer above the small chamber 6.
The operation of the device is as follows: When the boiler is loaded, the regulating flap 9 is open and the combustion air can flow under the grate into the room 4 and through the pipe 6 into the room 6. The fuel burns all over the grate and by the time it reaches the end of the grate it is completely burned out, cools down and the thermostat allows further fuel feed.
But as soon as the air valve 9 automatically, z. B. closed by the draft regulator or by hand, the fuel on the grate stops burning and its temperature drops. The flap 7, through which air is fed into the chamber 6, always remains open, even when the flap 9 is closed, so that the

Fuel continues to burn and glow above chamber 5 and as a result gives off heat to the thermostatic hollow body and stops the fuel supply until the small strip of fuel is burned.
If the air supply to the main box 4 is blocked, the air supply through the box 5 increases automatically, since the lower amount of combustion air supply means that the draft losses are smaller and the draft of the chimney or an artificial draft are fully used to suck in the combustion air into the chamber 5 can. Only after the fuel has burned off above the chamber 5 is the hollow body 8 cooled down again and causes the grate to advance a little, so that an unburned fuel layer arrives above the small chamber 5, which immediately starts to burn and stops the grate . This process is now repeated again. When the regulating flap 9 is opened as a result of the increase in the load, the fuel immediately catches on the whole grate. to burn on.
