Leielitmetall-Kolbenlegieriing.

Light alloy piston alloy ring.
In the technology of pistons for internal combustion engines, the light metal piston is at the forefront. Light metal piston alloys have been developed, which should meet the required mechanical and physical properties as completely as possible. The group of aluminum

the hardness can be influenced. Aluminum alloys with 2-120 "copper and 3-15% silicon and possibly other additives such as: Ni, Mg, Mn, Fe, Co, Cr or the like, are mainly used for pistons in high-performance machines.
The high hardness of such piston alloys, however, affects the sliding properties of the piston to the detriment of the wear resistance of the cylinder sliding surfaces, which are usually made of cast iron. The so-called oval grinding of the cylinder bore appears.
The purpose of the present invention is now to eliminate this disadvantage of such piston alloys.
Tests were carried out with pistons from the alloy group AI with 2-] 2/0 Cu and 3-150 "Si and, if necessary, further additives, e.g. Ni, Mg, Mn, Fe, Co, Cr or the like. where it was found

the sliding property of such pistons was improved by increasing the anti-friction in such a way that the wear of the cylinder sliding surfaces appears at a significantly later time and only to a very small extent.
On the one hand, alloys are already known which, apart from the carbon content, essentially correspond to the alloy according to the invention, and on the other hand those which, apart from the lack of antimony content, correspond to the alloys according to the invention. But apart from the fact that the last-mentioned, antimony-free alloy was not proposed at all as a piston alloy, the effect sought by the invention of achieving excellent sliding properties with high hardness and high wear resistance only appears if, in addition to antimony, it occurs within the specified limits a coordinated carbon content is available.
The antimony additive is simply added to the melt flow. The carbon is incorporated into the melt, for example in the form of soot, and precipitates as graphite in finely divided form when the cast alloy solidifies, aided by Si and Al.
