Description
<Desc/Clms Page number 1>

Process for the production of alloys with great hardness, high wear resistance and good cutting force.
Extensive tests have shown that nickel-molybdenum alloys can be hardened through a special thermal treatment. If nickel alloys with 8-30% molybdenum are heated in the cast or rolled state to a temperature above about 900 C, they are then cooled sufficiently quickly in the air or by immersion in water or oil and finally heated at temperatures between 400-800 C. , the strength properties of the alloys are increased very considerably compared to those before the thermal treatment.
For example, if you heat an alloy with 75% nickel and 25% molybdenum to 11000 C, quench it in water and leave it at 600 C for one hour, the hardness increases from 260 Brinelle units in the untreated state to 368 Brinelle units. If necessary, additions of one or more other elements, such as copper, aluminum, cobalt, chromium and manganese, up to 40% can be added to these heat treatable alloys. With such alloys, too, the strength properties can be increased considerably by a suitable thermal treatment, as indicated above.
PATENT CLAIMS:
1. A process for the production of alloys with great hardness, high wear resistance and good cutting force, which are retained even at higher temperatures, from nickel-molybdenum alloys with 8-30% molybdenum, characterized in that the alloys are from a temperature above about 900 C. cooled quickly and then tempered at temperatures between 400 and 800 C.
