<Desc/Clms Page number 3>

which cause a reversal of the direction of the outflow from the drive wheel, so that the driven wheel is informed of a rotation in the opposite direction.
In order to achieve a constant inflow of cooled water or some other liquid, the transmission device is preferably connected to the cooler of the engine or to another heat exchange device. The cooled water or other liquid is sucked into the working chamber by means of one or more Pitot tubes which are arranged in the return part of the liquid circuit in such a way that their outlet opposes the direction of flow of the liquid. One or more Pitot tubes are used to draw off excess liquid, the inlet openings of which are directed in the opposite direction to the direction of flow of the liquid.
In this way, an inflow and outflow of the liquid into and out of the working chamber is brought about.
The coordination of the force developed in the transmission device with that of the primary drive is ensured in the following way:
The mentioned drainage pipes are movable transversely to the liquid flow and can be brought into any position relative to the liquid flow by suitable devices, so that the strength (thickness) of this flow and also the amount of liquid in circulation and thus also the force from zero to can be varied to a maximum that is developed by the transmission device.
In the drawing, an example embodiment of the device according to the invention is illustrated, u. Between Fig. 1 is a vertical section, Fig. 2 is an end view, partly in section, Fig. 3 is an end view looking in the direction of arrow a of Fig. 1, and Fig. 4 is a schematic representation of the system for the supply and for cooling the water.
H is the left part of the outer housing of the impeller, which is connected to the engine shaft, and I is the right housing part next to the shaft to be driven. The engine shaft mounted on ball bearings T and 0 is denoted by C, the ball bearing T is located in an end cap Q of the housing and the bearing 0 is located in a recess U of the hub F of the driven disk F. A stuffing box V seals the drive shaft 0 from the outside . Instead of ball bearings, roller or plain bearings can also be used.
The central hub of the drive wheel B is keyed onto the drive shaft in such a way that it is taken along when it rotates, but is displaceable on the shaft 0 in the longitudinal direction. This shifting can take place by means of a forked lever J, which sits on a spindle K, which can be controlled from the outside by any suitable means, for example by the vehicle driver. Radially positioned guide and distribution plates B ′ of the driving impeller B lead to its blades A, which form part of a casting A which is connected to the wheel B by means of screws A2 or in some other way. L is the connection channel to the return line M.
The impeller blades D, which form part of the casting D1, are connected to the driven disk F, for example by means of screws D2, and this disk F is in turn attached to the driven shaft N. The blades E for reverse rotation form part of a ring V or are attached to the casting D, for example by means of screws E1. Between the blades E and the blades A of the driving impeller, stationary blades or vanes G made of a cast piece G1 are switched on and fastened to the cover plate G2 by means of screws G3; the casting G1 is connected to the central core part R1.
The latter has cover plates R2 attached by screws R3 and the middle part R has a cover plate R4 with fastening screws R5. Between these plates R2 there is a gap W for establishing the connection with the line M. m is a pipe leading from the machine cooler to the gap W.
The hub F1 runs on ball bearings X in the housing I and is equipped with a track Y for the ball thrust bearing in the middle part Z; this path takes up the pressure or thrust between the driving impeller B and hub F1.
The driven shaft N connected to the hub F1 runs in the ball bearing b or on the thrust bearing e, the housing d or the end cap e and is sealed by means of the stuffing box f.
The forked lever J grips a collar g of the driving impeller B; its pressure is absorbed by a bearing h with a screw ring i.
A sight glass k (Fig. 3), which is connected to the line M at the top and bottom, shows the amount of liquid in the transmission. n is a Pitot tube that can be adjusted in any position in the line M and is used to regulate or reduce the amount of liquid required in the circuit and also to cool the circulating liquid.
A valve-controlled pipe or the like, which leads from this chamber to a point in the circulation system, is used to relieve the chamber of pressure or to reduce it.
For operation, the transmission device is fed with liquid and this is brought to act on the blades D by the impeller blades as the machine shaft 0 rotates, whereby the disk F and thus the shaft N connected to it is driven.
In order to reverse the direction of rotation of the driven shaft N, the driving impeller B is adjusted along the drive shaft 0 by actuating the spindle K and the fork J until
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>
until its blades A are opposite the stationary blades G and thus the blades B. P is the connecting channel of these blades G to the return line M. The disk 0 is connected to the disk Q, which in turn has openings or channels which are located at the mouth of the line M to the driving impeller B. The inner walls of the line M are formed by the parts R, which consist of one piece with the outer housing H or are kept in their position by spacers S.
The water required to feed the working chamber is brought into the line M by means of the Pitot tubes T, the outlet openings of which are directed against the direction of flow of the water; The water can be withdrawn through Pitot tubes, the inlet openings of which face the direction of flow of the water.
In Fig. 4 the device for controlling the water admission is shown schematically; 1 is a storage tank, 2 and 3 are the connecting pipes from this to the cooler or radiator 4. The water flows from the tank 1 to the cooler and from there into the line M, with an excess being fed back through the valve 5 to the cooler. The main control valve 6 is actuated by means of a linkage 7 which is connected to the accelerator pedal of the vehicle so that the driver can control the admission of liquid to the power transmission device.
