EMI1.2

Method for changing the dimensions of objects made of cast types, in particular from
Gray cast iron, light metal, etc. like
It is known to press hollow sheet metal objects in a heated state with the aid of a flexible filler such as sand, steel balls or the like into molds enveloping the objects. Attempts have also been made to produce hollow castings, especially pistons for engines, pumps and the like. Like. To expand in that the cavities of the workpiece were filled with a filler material that has a higher coefficient of expansion than the material of the workpiece and that the workpiece so filled was heated and driven apart by the filling material expanding to a greater extent.
With this method, however, there is a risk that the workpiece will be shattered.
The invention relates to a method for changing the dimensions of hollow objects made of cast types, in particular gray cast iron, light metal and the like. Like. According to which the workpiece is brought to a larger circumference by heating and then filled with a filler material that prevents contraction of the hollow body during the subsequent cooling. The
EMI1.1
Filler material can be driven apart in a known manner by a small amount so that it lies exactly in a shape enclosing the body to be stretched, which is possible without the risk of breakage for the workpiece.
EMI1.2
represents the process serving shape in axial section.
A piston 1 made of cast iron, for example, is made to glow cherry red so that it expands as it is heated. In this heated state, the piston, which is expanded beyond its usual dimensions, is filled with a filler material 2 consisting of steel balls, sand or the like, and this filler material is then filled with the aid of a press ram. 3 compressed. The piston 1 is placed on a table top 4 and enclosed by a mold 5 which corresponds exactly to the dimensions to be achieved. The pin 6 corresponds to the piston pin.
If the ram 3 is now pressed or struck, the filling material 2 is pressurized in all directions and the glowing piston is pressed into the mold, which is possible without risk to the material of the piston due to the small expansion required. During the cooling that now follows, the filling material remains under pressure, and since it is selected in such a way that it maintains its volume while the piston is cooling, it prevents the piston from contracting, otherwise associated with cooling, so that a change in dimensions, an enlargement the diameter of the piston 'is achieved.
