EMI1.1

EMI1.1
In the case of combustion-electric vehicles (diesel-electric, petrol-electric) the
Difficulty keeping a vacuum pump for the brake running properly. The pump can be driven directly by the internal combustion engine, but it does not run when the internal combustion engine is switched off and the speed is also dependent on the speed of the internal combustion engine.
It is also possible to drive the pump from one axle of the vehicle, but in this case complicated devices are necessary in order to maintain the same direction of rotation of the pump when the direction of travel is changed. In addition, the speed changes with the speed of the vehicle and the actuation of the pump when the vehicle is at a standstill is not possible, so that, for example, a further separately driven pump or device would be necessary to release the brake.
It has also been considered to drive the vacuum pump from an auxiliary power system (battery), but this device has the disadvantage that the battery must have a large capacity if the pump is continuously fed by it or to charge a correspondingly large one Battery a separate machine of the appropriate power and size must be provided
According to the invention, these disadvantages are avoided in that the brake pump is driven by a double machine. This double machine has two armatures (or at least two armature windings), one of which is driven by the electrical power transmission system of the vehicle, while the second is fed by a battery. As long as the electrical power transmission delivers a voltage of a certain level, the first armature or the associated motor drives the vacuum pump, the second armature or the associated motor only has to drive the vacuum pump during the remaining relatively short time, so that the capacity of the battery can only be relatively small.
Since the second motor is out of operation during the operating time of the first motor, it can be used during this time in a manner known per se to recharge the battery. A separate battery charger is superfluous and, since the unit runs constantly in the same direction and only within a certain speed limit, the adjustment of the correct battery charging voltage is easier than if, for example, a machine driven by the axis should be used.
The drawing shows an example of a circuit of the unit forming the content of the patent. The brake pump 1 is coupled directly or via a back gear to a double machine that contains two armatures or at least armature windings. One armature 2 belongs to a machine that is fed by the electrical power transmission of the vehicle, while the second armature 5 is connected to the battery.
The machine 2 is fed via the line 8 from the main generator (not shown) of the electrical. Power transmission off. The motor 2 is expediently designed with predominantly very weak shunt excitation 4, so that its speed fluctuations remain within tolerable limits in the case of the large voltage fluctuations of the line 8 fed by the main generator. In addition, in order to develop a sufficient torque immediately upon start-up, the motor is switched on by means of two electromagnetic hoppers 15 and 16, the magnet coils of which are switched on by a battery 12 via the conventional brake slide switch 19.
This circuit has the effect that in the starting position a and in the driving position c-d, the resistor 14 is in front of the series winding 3 and the armature winding 2, so that the motor runs at a reduced speed, while in the position "brake
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
Release "b by switching on the hopper 15, the resistor 14 is short-circuited. The motor 2 drives the entire unit on as long as the voltage of the main generator in the line 8 exceeds a certain value. As long as this value is exceeded, the relay switch has 13 switched from the position shown to the right, so that the right contact is closed and the left contact is open.
In this position of the relay switch 13, the connection from the brake slide switch 19 via the series winding 6 of the motor 5 is interrupted and. the shunt excitation 7 of the same motor is closed. The armature J is excited by the shunt excitation 7, the strength of which is automatically regulated by a regulator 18, which is not shown in greater detail, in such a way that the correct voltage for charging the battery 12 is achieved. The automatic parallel connection of armature winding 3 and battery 12 takes place in a known manner by means of an automatic switch 9 with voltage winding 11 and reverse current winding 10.
If the voltage of the main generator in the line 8 does not reach the specific value, or if the main generator is at a standstill at all, the relay switch 13 is in the position shown. In this, on the one hand, the shunt excitation 7 and also the return line of the magnetic coils of the hoppers 15 and 16 are interrupted and, on the other hand, the connection from the brake slide switch 19 to the series winding 6 and to the armature winding 5 is established. In this position of the switching relay, the motor 2 is switched off and. the motor 5. runs as a series motor, fed via the brake slide switch 19 from the battery 12. The automatic switch 9 is switched off by the action of the reverse current winding 10.
As in the case of the motor 2, the speed is regulated by providing a resistor 17 in the positions a and c bia d of the brake slide holder 19.
Instead of the relay holder 13, other devices known per se, which in principle have the same effect, can also be used.
