EMI1.1
<Desc/Clms Page number 2>

EMI1.1
The invention relates to a multi-disc clutch, in particular for electrical cranking devices of internal combustion engines, in which the pressure of the discs necessary for the transmission of work is generated by a pressing member that can be displaced perpendicular to the plane of the discs so that the pressure corresponds to the torque to be transmitted. The friction in such clutches increases very quickly with increasing torque, so that they soon act like rigid clutches and therefore also transmit such load surges or torques which can lead to the destruction of a clutch part.
This disadvantage is avoided by a multi-disc clutch, in which, according to the invention, the multi-disc pressure is canceled after the pressing member has exceeded a predetermined path.
The invention is illustrated using two exemplary embodiments. Fig. 1 shows a pinion drive for an electric starter in section, Fig. 2 shows a second embodiment also in section, Fig. 3 is a section along line AB of Fig. 2, Fig. 4 shows the clutch in the relaxed position in a schematic manner .
A hollow shaft 3 is rotatably arranged on the shaft 1 of a torque armature 2.
One end of the shaft is designed as a pinion 4. The other end has a steep external thread 5, the pitches of which increase in the direction of rotation of the armature when the armature and the shaft are viewed from the pinion side. A nut 6 is seated on the thread. At the end of the thread, the shaft has a bore 7 for receiving a spring 8, which is supported against a flange 9 of the nut 6. The axial movement of the pinion shaft on the shaft 1 is limited by a stop nut 10. On the nut 6 disks 11 of one part of the coupling are placed, which are taken by drivers 12 of the mother.
The disks 13 of the other part of the coupling engage in recesses 14 on the circumference of a bell-shaped part 15, which is firmly connected to the shaft 1. A resilient disk 16 is slipped onto the shaft 1 and rests against a shoulder 17 of the shaft 1 can create. A press ring 18 is inserted between the resilient disk and the clutch disks. On the side facing the resilient washer, the nut 6 has several lugs on the circumference, which in the unpressurized position of the nut 6 are at a small distance from the spring washer.
The mode of operation of this multi-plate clutch is as follows: In the rest position of the armature 1, the spring 8 presses the clutch disks 11, 13 against each other in a known manner with weak pressure, so that the pinion is taken along by the clutch before engaging. As soon as the pinion is engaged, the nut 6, which is carried along by the clutch disks, screws itself against the resilient disk 16 and presses the disks 11 and 13 firmly against each other so that they can transmit the torque required to start the internal combustion engine. But if the pressure of the pressing member by an unforeseen overload, z. B. by a backfire of the engine, rises above the normal level, the resilient disc 16 gives even further, so that the lugs 19 come to rest on the disc.
From then on, the pressing through of the disk 16 is supported by the lugs 19
<Desc / Clms Page number 2>
in such a way that the support point of the lamellae deflects further than the part opposite the lugs 1, 9 of the nut 6; As a result, the pressure in the lamellas no longer increases, but decreases as the pressing member moves on.
The embodiment according to FIGS. 2 and 3 has, instead of the resilient disk, a plurality of rigid stop plates 20 which can be rotated around the shoulder 17 and are supported against the flange of the bell 15 by a powerful spring M. The plates are held in their radial position by projections 22 of the bell 15. With this arrangement, it is easier to adjust the tension of the spring necessary for the torque transmission.
In FIG. 4, the coupling is shown in that position in which the lamellar pressure is completely canceled; the bending of the spring washer is shown greatly exaggerated for the sake of clarity.
It goes without saying that several spring washers can be used instead of a single one and leaf springs can also be used instead of the spiral coil spring. It is also irrelevant for the invention whether the pressing member is a nut which is axially displaced by a thread. It could also be a pressing member that is moved by some other device depending on the torque.
