Werkstücke aus hochprozentigen Magnesiumlegierungen besitzen häufig oberflächliche Verunreinigungen, welche zu einer beschleunigten Korrosion Veranlassung geben. So z. B. sind Gussstücke mit einer Gusshaut überzogen, welche leicht angreifbare Verbindungen des Magnesiums enthält. Gepresste, gewalzte oder durch andere Mittel verformte Teile haben häufig eine Haut, welche Eisen oder verkohlte organische Produkte enthält, durch deren Gegenwart selbst nur in Spuren, wahrscheinlich infolge der Bildung von Lokalelementen. die korrodierende Wirkung der angreifenden Substanzen erhöht wird.
Es ist gefunden worden, dass diese Unbeständigkeit gegen Korrosion, z. B. im Falle der Gussstücke, beseitigt werden kann, wenn diese in einer wässerigen Lösung von Bichromaten (mit bis etwa 100 9 Cr03 im Liter) einige Zeit, beispielsweise eine oder mehrere Stunden, gekocht werden. Es lässt sich diese Oberflächenbehandlung noch durch eine Vorbehandlung der Stücke in verdünnter, beispielsweise 10 obiger Salpetersäure verbessern, durch welche die Formstücke zunächst blank gebeizt und von verschiedenen vom Giessen in den Sandformen herstammenden Verunreinigungen befreit werden.
Im Falle der durch Walzen, Pressen, Spritzguss und andere Mittel verformten Werkstücke aus diesen Legierungen können ebenfalls die Oberflächen durch Behandlung mit dem kochenden Bichromatbad, welchem gegebenenfalls eine Vorbeize mit Salpetersäure vorausgegangen ist, in einen gegen den Angriff von wässerigen Lösungen aussergewöhnlich beständigen Zustand übergeführt werden. Die durch die Bichromatbehandlung entstehende veränderte Oberfläche weist ausserdem die vorteilhafte Eigenschaft auf, aufgetragene Lackschichten dauerhaft festzuhalten.

It has been found that this instability to corrosion, e.g. B. in the case of castings can be eliminated if they are boiled in an aqueous solution of bichromates (with up to about 100 9 Cr03 per liter) for some time, for example one or more hours. In the case of workpieces made of these alloys by rolling, pressing, injection molding and other means, the surfaces can also be converted into an exceptionally resistant state against attack by aqueous solutions by treatment with the boiling bichromate bath, which may have been preceded by a pre-pickling with nitric acid .
