Procedure for hardening objects in places by nitriding.
The subject of the invention is a method for protecting individual parts of an object to be hardened by nitriding against acceptance of nitriding. In the method forming the subject of the invention, the iron objects to be hardened by nitriding are provided with a coating of a metal or an alloy at the points where they are to be protected from acceptance of the nitriding hardening, which during hardening of the article Protects bodies against the migration of nitrogen. The coating can consist of tin, zinc, lead, nickel, cadmium or alloys of these metals.
It has proven to be particularly suitable to provide the areas to be protected with a coating of tin or a tin alloy, which is applied either in the usual tinning manner or in such a way that the object with the areas to be protected is applied in a few minutes immersed in a liquid tin bath. After the piece, which has been tinned in some places, has been removed from the bath, the piece shows a layer of tin of varying and sometimes considerable thickness in the places in question.
The protective layer obtained in this way against the assumption of nitriding hardness resists - as tests have shown - several successive hardenings by nitriding.
Since the melting temperature of the tin or tin alloy is lower than the temperature that is used during nitriding, the tin or tin alloy melts during nitriding and, under certain circumstances, runs over those parts of the piece to be treated that are supposed to accept nitriding. In order to avoid the resulting disadvantages, the tin-plated areas are covered with a coating of sodium water glass and aluminum powder and this coating is left to dry well.
To avoid the disadvantages mentioned, the previously tinned areas or the whole piece can be immersed in a mating bath (e.g. made of sodium nitrate and potassium nitrate) heated to about 4uU L. In the bath, tin becomes liquid and flows to the ground without it being able to stick to the areas that were not previously tinned. The reason for this is that the non-tinned areas oxidize slightly after being placed in the salt bath and that the tin drops also cover with an oxide layer, so that they are not suitable for tinning. This slight oxidation of the non-tinned areas does not constitute the slightest obstacle to the actual nitriding hardening.
After the pieces have been treated in the manner indicated, they are subjected to the actual nitriding; In this, the non-tinned areas of each piece take on the well-known nitriding hardness, while the previously tinned and optionally provided with a coating of water glass and aluminum powder or immersed in the salt bath remain so soft that they can be processed without any difficulty.
PATENT CLAIMS:
1. A method for hardening objects in places by nitriding, characterized in that the objects are provided with a coating of tin, zinc, lead, nickel or cadmium or an alloy of these metals that does not allow nitrogen to migrate in the areas to be protected.
