Process for the polymerisation of hydrocarbons of the butadiene series.

It is known that hydrocarbons of the butadiene series can be polymerized with sodium to give rubber-like substances. The surprising observation has now been made that the use of sodium powder in a finely homogeneous distribution in feston diluents, such as. B. metal salts, causes a very uniform course of the reaction and the very uniform polymers thus obtained represent a high quality rubber. The amount of sodium used is small. The reaction is expediently carried out in a static pressure vessel. A
 EMI1.1
the amount of sodium metal can vary within wide limits; it is appropriate to use, for example
0-3 to 1 # 5% of the amount by weight of the hydrocarbon used.

Likewise, the concentration of the sodium metal with respect to the solid diluent can be chosen arbitrarily, so z. B. about 1/40 to 1/20 of the amount by weight of the diluent.

Example: 1. 5 parts by weight of sodium are ball milled in the form of wire or ribbon with 60 parts by weight of dry common salt in a ball mill in a nitrogen atmosphere until a homogeneous, finely powdered mixture is formed. This is heated to 35-40 with 240-270 parts by weight of butadiene in a pressure vessel until the butadiene has disappeared. The work-up is done in such a way that the resulting rubber is separated from the sodium-containing salt mass, which can easily be achieved, and it is treated with alcohol and then with water to remove any adhering sodium.

The reaction can also be carried out at room temperature, but then the duration is correspondingly longer. Instead of table salt, potassium chloride, anhydrous sodium sulfate or dry pumice stone powder can also be used as a diluent for sodium fun. Even under these circumstances, the working procedure is the same as given in the example.
