Process for the production of round objects from sponge rubber.
According to the present invention, spherical, cylindrical, tubular sponge rubber articles are to be produced without using a mold. The invention consists in that a vulcanized surface is produced on the rubber compound intended to form a round object from sponge rubber. before gas in this mass to produce the cell structure

vulcanized a mold. The formation of the vulcanized surface on the bulk of the sponge rubber dough can be effected by any of the known cold vulcanization processes, e.g.
B. by treating the surfaces with chlorosulfur vapor or solution, or alternating treatment with hydrogen sulfide and sulfur dioxide in gaseous form or in the dissolved state. Vulcanization

is created within the dough.
The formation of a vulcanized skin on the sponge rubber dough before the mass is exposed to a temperature at which gas is generated in the dough and vulcanization takes place throughout the mass permits use of an expanding mass retained on the surface to make that goes to take a shape of large volume with a small surface, so a cylindrical or spherical shape or another shape with a more or less circular or D-shaped cross-section.
To produce a Sehwammgummiseil in a continuous length, z. B. sponge rubber dough formed into a rod by pressing, then passed through chlorosulfur or another suitable cold vulcanizing agent. The rod made of sponge rubber dough, which is vulcanized on the surface, is covered on the outside with powdered chalk or another stickiness-preventing agent, then rolled up in a spiral, placed in a pan and exposed in a mold to a temperature suitable for hot vulcanization.
A tube can also be formed from sponge rubber instead of a rope or a band by pressing the sponge rubber dough into a tube and pre-vulcanizing the outer surface and also the inner surface before the entire mass is wound up and vulcanized as described above. In order to secure the tubular shape, the tube is pulled in a known manner onto a flexible core, for example onto an already vulcanized rope of solid rubber or a wire. After the complete vulcanization, the sponge rubber tube is stripped from the insert.
The pre-vulcanization of the surface of sponge rubber ropes, rods or tubes can also be effected with an over-accelerator in a powder bed instead of by cold vulcanization.
To make a sponge rubber ball. the foam rubber dough is formed into a spherical mass as far as necessary, while the approximately completely spherical shape is assumed by the mass during vulcanization under the effect of the expansion inhibited by the pre-vulcanized surface. For example, parts are cut from a sponge rubber cylinder, the length of which is equal to the diameter and cold vulcanized on the surface. The internal pressure, which is exerted by the gases generated when heated to the temperature of hot vulcanization,

converts the short cylindrical parts into spheres.
So that the ball does not become flat at the bottom due to the weight of the rubber compound, the hot vulcanization can be carried out in a bath of a liquid inert to rubber.

wants to produce rods with a D-shaped cross-section or other rounded sponge rubber articles with a flat base. The dimensions of the sponge rubber items, such as ropes. Tubes or balls, approximately, can be determined beforehand, taking into account the composition of the mass and the type of treatment to which they are to be subjected.
