Flash lamps, in particular for photographic purposes.
Flash lamps are already known in which an oxidizable metal in ribbon or wire form or a flash mixture is housed in a gas-tight, completely or partially evacuated transparent vessel which contains a filling of oxygen, oxygen gas mixture or oxygen-releasing gas. The lamp according to the invention differs from these known flashlight lamps in that foils of oxidizable substances, in particular metals and metal alloys, are used as the light developer and are embedded in the glass body in such a way that they are within the range of an ignition device.
Tests have shown that foils burn at an extraordinary rate if there is sufficient oxygen in a suitable purity or at the appropriate pressure.
This rapid combustion already occurs when the filling of the vitreous body contains the same amount of oxygen that is contained in the same amount of atmospheric air. There is now the remarkable difference that the combustion, for example of aluminum foils, takes place very slowly in the free atmosphere, while the combustion takes place in a flash with a pure oxygen filling of the vessel at 150 mm Hg pressure. In this case, according to the measurements taken, the duration of the combustion is on average 1/40 of a second. The speed of combustion can be increased by increasing the oxygen pressure.
The peculiar phenomenon occurs that when burning in atmospheric air, the light effect of the metal foil is only one hundredth of the light effect that is achieved when burning in the same amount of pure oxygen at 150 mm Hg pressure inside the vessel. The gas pressure in the lamp is then reduced in the ratio of the oxygen content in atmospheric air, i.e. in the ratio of about 21 to 79 in the lamp.
Metals, metal alloys and rare earths are particularly suitable as film material, e.g. B.
Aluminum, copper, iron, nickel, phosphor bronze, cerium, zircon, as well as organic substances. The combustion of the film can be initiated by any ignition device.
In the drawing, a flashlight lamp with electrical ignition is shown as an embodiment of the invention. The lamp is in the form of an ordinary electric light bulb. The glass bulb has the usual glass base 2 with a melted-in tube 3 for evacuating the lamp or
Filling the gases. The power supply wires 4a, 4b are melted into the glass base 2 and guided approximately into the middle of the glass bulb. The wires are held together by a glass bead 5 shortly before their end and are connected to one another at the end by an ignition wire 6. The ignition wire can be equipped with a squib 7 to facilitate combustion. The surrounding space is loosely filled with foils made of an oxidizable substance 8. With the same weight of the load, the lower the film thickness, the greater the lightening effect and the rate of combustion. In the case of metal foils, the thickness is around 0,0005 mm.
The lamp does not need any protection against the risk of explosion if the glass bulb is lost. This effect is based on the fact that the metal foil burns very slowly when the glass bulb becomes undrawn, so that a dangerous increase in pressure by releasing the heat of combustion to the outside atmosphere surrounding the lamp is prevented. The only drawback to the lamp leaking is that it does not function as a flashlamp.

When the current is switched on, the ignition wire 6 and, if applicable, the igniter 7 are burned. The resulting Zu. ndflamme causes the surrounding leaf filling 8 to ignite.
The filling must of course be in the effective range of the ignition device. The lamp has a very low production price because of the omission of a fuse and the possibility of using cheap foil material.
Another advantage of the lamp is that currents of low voltage can be used for ignition, since foils are extremely easy to ignite due to their low thickness.
The voltage of a simple flashlight battery is enough to initiate the ignition.
The flashlight lamp therefore also has the advantage that its use is not tied to a power grid.
When the lamp is used for photographic purposes, the inside or outside of the vessel can be provided with a layer that absorbs a spectral portion of the light, or the vessel itself can be made of a material that produces such an absorbing effect.
