Process for the production of phosphorus from ferrophosphorus.

For the production of phosphorus it is technically important to be able to obtain phosphorus from ferrophosphorus, since in the usual phosphate reduction process part of the phosphorus is always bound by the iron reduced from the iron-containing phosphate.

It has already been proposed to obtain phosphorus from ferrophosphorus by displacing the phosphorus using sulfur, hydrogen sulfide and other sulfur compounds. It has now been found that it is possible to displace the phosphorus from its bond with iron with silicon. In this regard, silicon is of particular technical interest insofar as ferrosilicon can be produced directly in the various commercial types.

Investigations have z. B. show that from ferrophosphorus by introducing silicon a ferrosilicon with a silicon content of 40-50% can be produced, the phosphorus content of which is only below Y2%. It is expedient to try to produce the usual commercial products with 50.75 or 90% silicon from the outset.

When carrying out the process, a mixture of ferrophosphorus with the required amounts of silicon, or of silicon with high percentage ferrosilicon, or with the corresponding amount of silicic acid and carbon (e.g. coke) as the formation mixture of the silicon, is melted in an electric furnace of a known type , which is provided with devices for the recovery of the escaping phosphorus vapors. If necessary, the removal of the phosphorus vapors from the furnace chamber can be promoted by supplying inert gases. The ferrosilicon is tapped temporarily or continuously.
