Schaufelrad.

In manchen Fällen, z.

Paddle wheel.
The invention relates to paddle wheels, the blades of which move relative to the wheel about axes that are parallel or approximately parallel to the wheel axis during the rotation of the wheel, and are all always acted upon by the medium in which they work, predominantly in one direction, which runs perpendicular to the Radaehse. Sole paddle wheels can be used as drive means for water or aircraft, as water or wind power machines, pumps, ventilators, blowers or the like.
To explain the essence of the invention, the type of paddle wheels to which the invention relates are to be shown in the exemplary embodiment shown in elevation in FIG. 1 and in plan in FIG. 2.
The main shaft 1 carries the wheel body 2 in which the blades 3 are rotatably mounted about axes 4. The wheel as a whole rotates around the axis 1 in the direction of the arrow u and at the same time performs a translational movement relative to the medium surrounding the blades (e.g. water), so that this

which drive the axes of the blades 3 by means of the link 7.
In a paddle wheel of this type, one and the same edge of each paddle always rushes ahead against the relative flow and comes into engagement with the medium as the leading edge. This circumstance makes it possible to give the blade a favorable drop profile developed in the sense of modern fluid mechanics. A significant difficulty, however, is that the angle of incidence, which the relative speed between the blade and the medium forms with the chord of the blade, is on two different sides of the blade chord when passing through the front or the rear wheel half and that the relative movement of the parts of the medium goes against it the imaginary shovel does not take place in a straight line, but in curved paths.
For these reasons, the shape of the blade and in particular the curvature of its central surface must be carefully adapted to the law of motion if the very high degree of efficiency possible with such blade wheels is actually to be achieved. Because of the action on the back of the blades in the rear half of the wheel (see the difference in the action in the blade positions I and 11 in Fig. 6, which will be discussed in more detail later), even relatively small errors in shape cause an uneven distribution of the hydraulic load on the two wheel halves and thus sensitive loss of efficiency.
The present invention consists in that the curvature of the central surface of the blade is determined to such an extent that, as theoretical considerations reveal and experimental sewing tests confirm, it is possible to achieve a very high degree of efficiency.
It is based on the knowledge that the relative movement of the medium against the blade, which is thought to be stationary, can be reduced to a rotation around a momentary center for every operating state and every blade position. Realizing that the medium of the shovel in crooked

For the cam disk drive shown, according to FIG. 3, the instantaneous center MI results as the intersection of the diameter PO drawn through the axis of rotation of the blade with the normal Q-M1 on the cam 5 at the instantaneous point of contact of the roller. However, in order to find the complete relative movement of the blade in relation to the medium, the rotation around the instantaneous center MI has to be combined with the translational speed t ', which is some distance in front of the blade

means.
The relative movement of the medium against the vane takes place as if the vane, which is imagined to be stationary, were acted upon by a flow that runs in an arc around the flow pole M2 in the direction of the arrows 10. The line r shown in phantom in FIG. 3 therefore indicates a numerically precisely determinable measure of the curvature of the relative flow to which the blade shape is to be adapted.
EMI2.5
The curvature of the relative flow and the curvature of the blades adapted to it will therefore be different for one and the same wheel, depending on whether it is to serve, for example, as a drive element for a fast light cruiser or for a heavily loaded tractor.
The curvature of the relative flow is different at different points on the circle ABCD (Fig. 2). The decisive factor for the choice of the correct saw blade shape is primarily the curvature f or the relative flow in the two points dz and C, which lie on the diameter perpendicular to the translation.
According to the invention, the curvature of the central surface of the blade should now lie between the arithmetic mean and the geometric mean of the two flow curvatures in A and in 0, which both theoretical considerations and practical tests have proven to be correct; In other words: the radius R of the middle section surface (Fig. 4) of the blade should be smaller than half the sum r1 and r2 (Fig. 7) and larger than the square root of the product of r1 and fa.
5, 6 and 7 show the flow and force diagrams for paddle wheels used, for example, for ship propulsion, in which, for example, the law of motion of the blades is such that the radius vectors that are perpendicular to the blade surface and start from the pivot point of the blades , all always intersect at one point. The blades are curved differently in these three figures and the flow and force diagrams shown show the way in which exceeding or falling below the above limits for the curvature of the central surface of the blades adversely affects the hydraulic effects of the wheel.
In the wheel according to FIG. 5, the radius of curvature of the central surface of the blades is larger and in the wheel according to FIG. 6 the radius of curvature of the central surface of the blades is smaller than it is for the purposes of the present invention
EMI2.6
is dimensioned speaking of the invention. All other dimensions and also the operating conditions are assumed to be the same for all three wheels.
The groups of arrows w represent the relative flow of the blades curved around the flow poles M (these are only shown in FIG. 7 for the sake of simplicity), while the arrows It show the hydraulic forces acting on the blades in their individual positions according to magnitude and direction reproduce how they were found from the flow tests on airfoil profiles taking into account the curved flow and the propulsion effect of the blades.
5 shows that with straight or insufficiently curved blades, the main part of the hydraulic thrust lies on the rear half of the wheel, while the front half of the wheel only works little or not at all, and can even back up the water. Fig. 6 shows that if the blades are too curved, the front half of the wheel takes over the main part of the hydraulic stroke, while the
<Desc / Clms Page number 3>

are bound.
The above conclusions, drawn from theoretical considerations, have been fully confirmed by experimental testing.
As can be seen without further ado, any unequal loading of the two wheel halves already means a loss of efficiency, plus the power losses due to the accumulation effect and the sometimes unfavorable force effect.
In the case of a paddle wheel in which the curvature of the central surface of the paddles is dimensioned in accordance with the invention, these disadvantages are eliminated, as FIG. 7 shows, in that the hydraulic load is reduced
EMI3.2
As an example of the dimensioning of the blade curvature, a blade wheel is cited, which works as a feed pump in a closed channel with a rectangular cross section. It is assumed that the diameter of the Sehauf elkreises 3? and that the wheel at 125 revolutions per minute delivers a quantity of water bols, which in the wheel cross-section causes a translation speed v of 2'50 m / sec. The law of motion of the blades, like the one already mentioned above, is such that the radius vectors which are perpendicular to the blade surfaces and emanating from the axes of rotation always intersect at a point that is on the diameter passing through C (Fig. 2) at a distance of 0 # 36 m from the center of the wheel.
The curvatures determined by the method described
EMI3.3
Radius r2 = 1 m. The arithmetic mean of these two values is 1'55 m, the geometric mean 1-45 m. According to the invention, the central surface of the blades of this wheel should therefore have a curvature, the radius of which is greater than 1 # 45 m and less than 1'55 m.
The center line of the blade does not always have to be an arc of a circle, but, depending on the type of profile used, can also form another curve that is similar to an arc of a circle. In the sense of FIG. 4, the blade curvature is always understood to be the radius R of that circle which is determined by the leading edge, the trailing edge and the center of the blade thickness in the center of the length T of the profile (point S). In the case of a strongly rounded profile head, the leading edge is to be understood as the line of intersection of the surface of the blade with the center surface of the blade, i.e. with the surface that halves the blade dieke at all points.
The invention extends not only to paddle wheels whose blades have a cylindrical central surface. In some cases, e.g. B. in the case of blades that protrude freely into the medium with one end, it can be advantageous to choose the curvature of the central surface differently in different cross-sections, similar to the case with the wings of aircraft.
According to the invention, the curvature of the central surface should then lie within the specified limits, at least in the mainly working part of the blades:
The law of motion of the blades can be different; the blades can oscillate relative to the wheel or rotate at a non-uniform angular velocity. Relevant for the movement
