If the filament of the light bulb breaks or the circuit within the socket is transferred to others
Way, e.g. B. dt'rch pulling out the lampa, is interrupted, then at the same moment at the terminals e and t of the barrel the full voltage of the series (mains voltage), z. B. 110 or 220 volts, which is generally a multiple of the partial voltage applied to a lamp.

   With correct
Dimensioning, the breakdown voltage between each two neighboring metal particles is exceeded by this voltage increase, the countless immeasurable lines of spark are broken through and the metal particles are welded together at their points of contact by the heat of the flashover sparks. Through this metallic welding or fritting of the loose metal mass, it takes on the character of an ordinary first-class conductor and now offers that
Current flow almost no more resistance. By correctly dimensioning the cross section of the resistance column, the resulting equivalent resistance can be made equal to the resistance of the burning lamp.

As long as no replacement lamp is switched on in place of the defective or missing lamp, the replacement resistor created in the manner described remains switched on and causes the entire remaining series of lamps to continue to burn at full light intensity. One by jarring the loosely fritted
The tendency caused by the metal grain mass to fall apart is prevented by the fact that at the same moment the full voltage of the series occurs again at terminals e, f and the grain column frits again.

However, as soon as a replacement lamp is inserted into the socket in place of the missing one, a slight vibration of the latter is sufficient to completely de-frit the wire bridge and restore it to the state of no-current, which is noticeable in that the newly switched on lamp also burns at full luminosity like the other lamps in the series. The replacement of defective lamps can therefore be carried out without switching off the series under power.

Because of the small space requirement and the simplicity of the design, the described
Arrange equivalent resistance also in any other type of lamp holder, likewise in the base or glass body of the incandescent lamp itself between the insertion electrodes, whatever for the essence and the
Mode of action of the subject matter of the invention is irrelevant. It can also be used as an automatically acting equivalent resistor for other types of electric lamps, e.g. B. arc lamps, as well as any type of electrical apparatus to be connected in series can be used with advantage.

Claims (1)

EMI2.2 PATENT CLAIM: Equivalent resistance for electric lamps to be connected in series, which is connected in parallel to each individual lamp and automatically bridges the fault when the circuit of the lamp in question fails, made up of a very large number of loosely adjacent particles, characterized in that its individual particles consist of Consist of metal grains or metal shavings.
