 <Desc/Clms Page number 2>

Pistons, in particular light metal pistons for internal combustion engines.

Pistons for internal combustion engines, especially those made from alloys of aluminum and magnesium, have to be designed with a lot of play in the diameter in relation to the cylinder wall due to the large thermal expansion of these building materials in order to prevent seizing at high speed and high temperatures. This large game allows the piston to move laterally when cold in operation, u. between this movement occurs almost exclusively perpendicular to the piston pin. This causes a rattling noise and brings with it a great deal of wear on the piston and the cylinder path.

At the top of the piston, the movements are dampened by the piston rings, which create a loose connection between the cylinder and piston.
 EMI1.1
 u. between. In such a way that the diameter of the piston perpendicular to the piston pin is made larger than in the direction of the piston pin axis. The piston skirt was made elastic so that it could press against the cylinder wall when heated. These constructions have the disadvantage that they have to be made too weak in order to ensure that they nestle against the cylinder wall and nevertheless generate impermissible contact pressures on the cylinder wall.

The subject of the invention is a construction in which in the cold state a deformation and tension is caused in the piston, which disappears when the piston heats up, whereby the play of the piston against the cylinder wall is approximately perpendicular to the piston pin for the warm and cold piston remains the same.

Fig. 1 of the drawing shows a piston re. A ring with a conical thread is screwed into it. The mating thread in the piston for the ring b is not carried out over the entire circumference. but there are parts of the thread, u. between completely milled out on the piston pin bosses and expediently partially also at the points perpendicular to the piston pin spindle, so that only the elevations c in Fig. 5-10 remain, which press against the ring b. The millings can expediently also be designed in such a way that two prongs do not remain on each side as in FIG. 5, but only a single prong or a contact surface of the thread over part of the piston width.

The purpose of this construction is as follows: The piston is manufactured with normal play, as necessary, and the ring b is screwed in with the help of the conical thread so far that the piston is deformed, as shown in Fig. 6 schematically in exaggerated form Mass is shown. The diameter of the tube becomes larger in the direction of the axis a-a than in the direction b-b.

This means that the play in the cold state in the direction a- (t to the cylinder wall is smaller and thus lateral movements of the piston are prevented. The inserted ring b is expediently made of a material that has a low specific thermal expansion And also for the reason that the ring b is better ventilated and is only loosely connected to the piston, the expansion of the ring b will be smaller than the expansion of the piston. The ring will expediently be made of cast iron, since cast iron has the property possesses not to change its original form.

Therefore, when the piston is heated, the ring b moves away from the piston

remove the wall a little, so that the flask has the opportunity to return to its round shape, and when hot it will assume its normal shape and work like a normally manufactured flask.

It is of course also possible that the ring can be used when the piston is worn to deform the piston by tightening and to bring it to rest against the cylinder wall and in this way to be able to use the piston even if it is normal Execution would be unusable due to too large a game. The insertion of the ring need not be threaded. but it can also be pressed in tightly, as shown in FIG. Appropriately, as shown, two or more rings or, as shown in FIG. 4, supports s can be used. The embodiment with supports, as in FIG. 4, has the advantage that the pressure required to deform the piston can be achieved with small cross-sections of the inserted part and thus the construction becomes lighter.

In order to facilitate the deformation of the piston, it may be useful to separate the lower track of the piston from its upper part and both can either be solidly made in one piece
 EMI2.1
can move freely. The connection of t with cl can also take place by screwing, as indicated in FIG. 3.

Figs. 8-10 show a particular embodiment of the invention. Since with certain materials it may be feared that when the piston is heated, the deformation will still exist even if the ring becomes detached, it is expedient to manufacture the piston, as shown in FIG. 8, so that its diameter in the axis of the piston pin bb is larger than perpendicular to it in the axis aa. In Fig. 9 it is shown how the piston in the cold state is deformed to such an extent that the diameter a- <: becomes larger than b-b. FIG. 10 shows the piston in the warm state and the permanent deformation possibly caused by the ring is canceled by the oval production from the start, as FIG. 8 shows.

The teeth c can be selected in such a way that the deformation of the piston assumes a shape that is favorable for the contact with the cylinder. The correct deformation of the piston when bracing can
 EMI2.2
 coat supported or designed appropriately.

The insertion of the deformation parts can expediently take place in such a way that the piston is completed with the correct clearance, the deformation parts are manufactured in such a way that they then fit exactly into the piston when it is heated. When cooling down, the piston will then have a larger diameter in the direction perpendicular to the piston pin axis than in the direction of the piston pin axis. When inserting the supports, there will be a temperature difference between the piston and the supports
 EMI2.3
achieve and compensate for the elastic yielding of the bracing parts.
