Process for the production of benzene, gasoline and alcohol from mixtures.
The subject of the invention is a method for separating benzene or up to about 100 boiling gasoline and alcohol from mixtures of the two, such as those obtained in technology in many extractions, for example the extraction of bitumen from lignite. The same thing consists in that the mixture is first subjected to distillation with steam, a constant boiling mixture of hydrocarbon, alcohol and water being transferred. The distillate separates into two layers, one of which contains the bulk of the hydrocarbon, some alcohol and water, the other water, alcohol and a little hydrocarbon.
For complete separation, this mixture is now diluted with water, expediently in a mixing vessel, and allowed to settle, whereby two layers are formed, one of which contains a practically alcohol-free hydrocarbon, the other a dilute alcohol free of hydrocarbons. The dilute alcohol can be separated from the hydrocarbon and converted to high grade alcohol by rectification.
In the German patent specification No. 364435 a process for the recovery of solvents is already described, in which the distillate is fed to a separating vessel, in which it separates into two layers, of which the upper one, which should consist of pure solvent, is reused Extraction is used while the aqueous lower layer is rectified and the rectified product is returned to the silk bottle. However, the separation achieved in this way is in reality very imperfect. The upper layer contains, besides benzene and alcohol, a good deal of water, while the lower layer contains not inconsiderable amounts of benzene besides alcohol and water.
In contrast, according to the method according to the invention, the fact that the distillate is mixed with sufficient amounts of water before entering the silk bottle results in a practically complete separation into pure benzene and dilute alcohol.
If the lower layer of the distillate obtained according to patent specification No. 364435 is subjected to rectification, a ternary distillate consisting of benzene, alcohol and water is obtained again, which must be collected separately from rectified alcohol if it is a matter of precise separation of alcohol and benzene and the production of the highest possible alcohol.
In the present process, this is avoided by adding a benzene-free alcohol to the rectification. A binary mixture of 95'57% alcohol and 4'43% water is obtained with direct steam on the rectification column, while the ternary mixture consists of 74'1% benzene, 18'5% alcohol and 7'4% water, so that So with the latter, more water is transferred in percentage than with the binary mixture.
In rectification with direct steam, first the ternary mixture passes over and then the binary one, so rectification to 95% alcohol from benzene-containing alcohol could not be achieved at all in one operation without the aforementioned separation of the ternary mixture that passes first.
