Description

Process for bleaching vegetable fiber material.

Through the scientific research of the last years it has become known that chlorine dioxide proves to be quite ineffective against certain body classes, whereas it has an energetically destructive effect on other bodies of an organic nature. So z. B. Cellulose is only slightly or not at all attacked by chlorine dioxide under certain conditions, while at the same time the dyes that accompany the fiber materials in their raw state as cotton, flax, jute, cellulose, etc., are destroyed very quickly.

The present process is based on this fact, which consists in treating these fiber materials in the loose, spun or woven state or pulp, paper, etc. with gaseous chlorine dioxide or a solution of chlorine dioxide.

The chlorine dioxide can be represented by one of the known methods. If some of the dyes should withstand the action of chlorine dioxide, complete lead can still be achieved by adding hydrogen peroxide, superoxides, persalts, permanganate.

An excess of chlorine dioxide and prolonged exposure to it do not damage the fiber, which is not the case when using common bleaching agents.

Exemplary embodiment for cotton fabric: The fabrics are pretreated as usual for bleaching and then treated in a bath into which chlorine dioxide is introduced or which contains chlorine dioxide in solution, if possible with occasional agitation of the fabric. The bleaching effect of the chlorine dioxide can be increased by warming the bleaching bath and this can also shorten the duration of the bleaching process. Once the correct degree of bleaching has been reached, the goods are rinsed thoroughly, if necessary exposed to superoxide, etc. beforehand.
