Consiste en uno o varios dispositivos electromagnéticos de tipo transformador que en incrementos discretos, ajusta la tension de salida que llega a los consumidores, estando constituido por un transformador con un arrollamiento primario dual o cuádruple, y un simple arrollamiento secundario, pudiendo situarse el arrollamiento simple antes o después de la rama paralelo, siendo el funcionamiento del equipo similar.
