Abstract

A method of producing lactic acid from municipal solid waste, characterized by the following stages: (a) crushing cellulosic components of municipal solid waste; (b) acid hydrolyzing the cellulosic component in step (a) to obtain a soluble component and an insoluble component; (c) separating the soluble and insoluble components obtained in step (b); (d) separating the soluble component obtained in step (c) into an acid-containing solution and a sugar-containing solution; (e) concentrating the sugar-containing solution to about 1-20% sugar; (f) adjust the pH of the concentrated sugar-containing solution obtained in step (e) to approximately 4.5 to 7.5; (g) ferment the solution obtained in step (f) with lactic acid bacteria to approximately 25 to about 40 ° C to give a solution containing lactic acid; (h) removing lactic acid bacteria from the solution obtained in step (g); (i) processing the solution obtained in step (h) to obtain a commercially acceptable form of lactic acid; (j) drying the insoluble component obtained in step (c); and (k) burning the dry insoluble component obtained in step (j) as boiler fuel to produce energy.
