Be it known that l, ERNEST Britons, a citizen of the United States oi America, residing in New York, in the borough of Brooklyn, county of' Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in a Combined Blanket and Sleeping-Bag, of which the following is a speci'cation.

This invention relates to an improved blanket and sleeping bag.

Sleeping bags were heretofore used by persons camping out or by persons who desire to sleep in the outer air for the treatment of pulmonary, bronchial and other diseases. lhese sleeping bags were permanently closed at their lower ends and laced up along one side so as to cover the body up to the neck, there being two or more layers of fabric across the front ci the body and along the back. rnhe sleeping bags were made oll woolen and cotton materials.

rlhe object of this invention is to so improve the sleeping bags heretofore in use that the same can be spread out to their jull size for use as blankets when not required lor use as sleeping bags. This permits a twofold use of the article, namely, as a blanket or cover for beds and as an outdoor sleeping1 bag when such a one is desired, and also the airing and laundrying of the article, which could not be done with the sleeping bags heretofore in use and 'for this purpose the invention consists of the combined blanket and sleeping bag consisting ol an oblong piece oi woolen or other cloth adapted to be folded along longitudinal lines into three superposed layers, the uppermost lay f being provided along its outer side edge and lower end with buttonholes, while along the inner edge of the intermediate layer and at its lower end are placed buttons, and along the lower edge of the lower portion. buttonholes registering with the end-buttonholes oi the upper layer, so as to permit the overlapping and closing of the lower ends of the lower and intermediate layers for forming a double closure of the foot-end and a closure along the side oi the sleeping bag, when used as such, and the unbuttoning and flattening out of the entire piece of cloth when it is desired to use it as a blanket.

Referring to the drawings, d represents an oblong piece or blank of woolen, hall-woolen, oamels-hair, or other l'abric, which is made oi su'llicient length 'lor inclosing the body Vfrom the l'eet to the neck, so as to be used as a blanket or sleeping bag, as desired. 'lhe width oi the oblong piece el fabric e is equal to three times its width when used as a sleeping bag, so that it can be folded up into three superposed layers l, 2 and 3. A single button d2 is elaced at the opposite upper corner of the intermediate layer, and corresponds in location with the buttonhole b2 ci the top-layer.

llhen the piece of cloth or bla-nl: e is spread out to its :lull length, it can be used as a blanket Alor the bed, or lap-robe in traveling, in which case it is used with. the buttons preillO erably at the under-side, so that only the buttonholesb, b1, b2 are visible at the upper side, the points where the buttons are attached being indicated by the fastening cross-stitches. fhen the piece of cloth aY is to be used as a sleeping bag, it is folded up along the longitudinal dotted lines shown in Figs. 4 and 5 into three superposed layers, the middle portion forming the lower layer l, the left-hand side-portion the intermediate layer 2, and the Vopposite or right-hand sideportion the top-layer, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2. The lower ends of the three layers are then connected. with each other by folding the end of the lower layer over the downwardly-folded lower edge of the intermediate layer and buttoning the buttonhele at the lower ends of the lower and top layers over the buttons d1 of the intermediate layer, so that a double closure at the foot-end of the bag is obtained ,-one by the buttoning of the lower folded-over end of the lower layer with the buttons at the lower end of the intermediate layer, and the other by the buttoning of the lower end of the top-layer to the buttons d1 of the intermediate layer 2, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. When the sleeping bag is thus closed at the lower end, so as to prevent the ingress of cold air by the double closure Vof the superposed layers, the bag is drawn over the body, which is placed between the lower and intermediate layers, and then buttoned up along the side of the body by the buttons d and buttonholes l), and in addition thereto at the opposite upper corner by the buttonhole b2 and button d2. Ihe bag is thus closed at the feet and along the sides of the body and at the neck, so as to envelop, in connection with a separate hood for the head, the entire body and head and permit thereby the sleeping out of doors, or in a camping tent, as desired. For changing the bag to a blanket, the layers are unbuttoned in reverse order, until the entire piece of cloth can be s read out flat and then used as a blanket. l/ Then not in use, or while traveling, it can be readily rolled up for being conveniently stored or carried.

By the specific arrangement of the buttons and buttonholes, the -formation of the woolen or other cloth into a sleeping bag or a blanket can be readily accomplished, so that the article can be used for several purposes, namely, as a blanket, lap-robe, and sleeping bag, as desired.

Having thus Vdescribed my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:

l. A combined blanket and sleepin bag, consisting of an oblong piece of cloth folded into three superposed layers ,-a lower, intermediate and upper layer, means for detachablyconnecting the inner side or edge of the intermediate layer with the outer edge of the upper layer, and means for connecting the lower overlapping ends of the lower and inlayers registering with the buttons on theV intermediate layer, the lower ends of the lower and intermediate layers overlapping each other for forming a double closure.

3. A combined blanket andV sleeping bag, comprising an oblong piece of cloth folded into three portions or layers,-a lower, intermediate and upper layer, the intermediate layer being provided at the inner ed `e of its longer side and at its lower end with uttons and with an additional button at the upper opposite corner, and the upper layer bein provided along the edge of its longer side an at its lower end and at its opposite upper corner with buttonholes connecting with the buttons of the intermediate layer, and additional buttonholes along the lower end of the lower layer corresponding to the buttons at the lower end of the intermediate layer for connecting or disconnecting the layers so as to form either a sleeping bag or a blanket.

il. A combined blanket and sleeping bag, comprising anv oblong piece of cloth folded into three layers, the lower end of the lower layer being folded over the downwardlyturned edge of the intermediate layer and provided with buttonholes along the lower end, registering buttonholes in the overlapping end of the top-layer, and buttons attached to the lower end of the intermediate layer and adapted to be passed through the buttonholes of the lower and top layers.

5. A combined blanket and sleeping bag, com rising a lower layer folded upwardly at the ower or foot end, an intermediate layer folded downwardly at its footortion and Y having said ortion fitting wit iin the upwardly folde portion of the lower layer, and an upper layer to the lower or foot portionof which the lower and intermediate layers are connected at said folded portions.

6. A combined blanket and sleeping bag,
